Hello,

I will be starting medical school in August and I graduated in December. I have been able to travel and I am trying to learn some things I have not gotten the chance to like coding. I've applied for some short-term jobs and am waiting to hear back. What do you think are some good things for me to do during this time off? If you had this time, what would you do? Anything that might ease the transition into medical school? I am definitely not doing any sort of pre-studying since I have heard that is useless.

Thanks!

I am in a similar situation and would love to hear others' opinions! Like you, I also plan to spend some time cultivating interests outside of school (e.g. checking books off my 'to read list, learning Spanish) and am looking for some type of employment. I think travelling is great if you can afford it. I'd personally like to continue volunteering because that is something that's important to me. I also think it will be good to establish/maintain healthy habits (in terms of cleaning up diet, exercise, mental health, etc.) ahead of entering medical school.

I would do as much socializing and pursue traveling and hobbies as much as possible! If you need the money then find a job, otherwise just have a great time. You life is going to be a lot more stressful in medical, so I'd recommend doing other things you won't have as much time for through medical school/residency/fellowship. Also, I'd try and create healthy habits when it gets closer for school to start such as: eating healthy, working out, getting a full 6-8 hours, etc. That's just what I personally would do, but I haven't been in your situation so what do I know lol.

Those sound like great ideas. I've also got some books to read and have a Spanish Great Course I am planning on doing. Enjoy your time off and congrats!

Some pre-school cash may be good to have on hand for the jackets/social events/obscure things.

Travel to maybe more places if you have the money/time! If not, socialize, create a good community that will support you outside of medical school. If you have family that lives close, spend some more time with them because I found it hard balancing that with new classmate friends, outside school friends, and school itself.
