Hey guys, I am just wondering if you have to graduate before you goto med school. I am a junior Bio major and am applying to med school next year. I am just wondering if once I get accepted(hopefully), I can just leave my undergrad and go to med school. I will have already fulfilled all the required courses for 99% of med schools by then. Thanks

Nope. Med schools require that you complete whatever degree you are pursuing while you apply. I'm not sure if this post was a joke or not, but I just replied anyway.

Yup, I've heard the same thing as well. Or at least, that's what the schools I applied to require.

You'll either need your degree or a very good reason for not completing your degree. And it better be something like, you need the extra time to complete your Nobel Prize-caliber research.

No, you are required to have 90 hours of college credit, including the prerequisites. I know many medical students and a physician that didn't complete their degree.

That depends on the school, though.

Why wouldn't you just finish your degree? You've been there for 3 years, what's one more year? I know the degree may not mean much, but most med students have at least a bachelors before entering med school

there are some schools. not any american... but caribs that u can do that i think. and i believe some DO schools. ( i know u can do that with pharmacy school)

All schools I applied to require degree verification.

I think you're thinking of pharm school buddy.

My pediatrician, who is an M.D. did not complete his degree.

My good friend who is a 2nd year D.O. student at my school also did not complete his degree.

Also, the state of Texas requires 90 hours of college credit for its 7 state M.D. institutions and 1 D.O. institution. No degree is required for any of them.

it depends on the school. read each school's website to get its specific info. most require a bachelor's degree. the ones that don't strongly suggest it.

remember that during that last year you can act like a total slacker and get all C's if you want. i would think you'd regret it later if you don't finish up the degree especially if you're so close.

Or you could just acquire a copy of the MSAR (see AAMC website) and just look at each school. Most require a bachelor's degree, and by most I mean 90%+. Every school I applied to required one, and there was a mix of publics and private schools, none of which were in Texas.

Almost all medical schools say they require 90 semesters of college credit or more, but the truth is <5% that matriculate do not receive or did not complete their bachelors degree. If you listed on AMCAS/AACOMAS that you would complete so-and-so courses by the time that the Spring semester/quarter was over, you are expected carry on with this. To put it simply, yes, you are required to complete your degree, and my guess is it would be very rare for an exception to be made in this particular case.
