Hi does anyone have the average/median scores of GRE biochemistry tests for students admitted to good Ph.d. programs in physiology or biochemistry?
What is a good score? 😕

I got into Caltech and had something like 89th percentile on the biochem GRE. My GPA was unimpressive but I did extremely well on the general GRE.

I'm pretty sure the general GRE is the most important single thing for PhD admissions, but you probably want to study for the biochem test if you're going to take it. It's pretty hard (in terms of the amount of material it covers).

I would agree...the general GRE holds a lot of weight, but the subject exams obviously carry weight as well, depending on the programs involved and how competitive they are. If you have a good-to-decent GPA (> 3.2), and excellent recommendations (especially if you did any undergrad research), that should go a long way to getting you into the better programs.

General rule of thumb - mid 600's to 700's on general GRE. The more competitve the program the higher the biochemistry GRE - Most good programs want to see at least a 66 percentile score one Std from the mean. Better programs want you at 75 percentile. Call and ask programs what they want to see.

See the books on your other post - what I did not say is you wanted to know how to study - the answer on how to study is speed - GRE is designed for you to not finish it. The general test on the computer figures your score and if you can do hard questions - it gives you those till it determines your score. The subject tests are designed to a very fast reader. So if you read slow you are not going to do well. Best is to get several practice tests and a kitchen timer and take the tests in the time allowed. Also hit the speed reading sites and practice going fast with your reading. get your WPM up there. Most testers loose time figuring out how to guess. You want to have your guessing down pat so you read the questions and answers then give an answer as fast as possible. There is principle I found in that it takes you longer to lose a computer game of solitaire than to win one. Same applies with the GRE test questions - if you know it you are fast - if you don't you spend more time on it and miss questions you could have gotten later.

Be careful who you get advice from also. Two of my three sections of the general GRE were above 95 percentile if I remember correctly and the other was at 89-90 percentile. If you can find a stud muffin at 99 percentile take their advice. You can also take my advice with a grain of salt also does not matter to me.

Hi there,
Don't mean to advertise/spam or anything, but there are several websites with ebooks for the gre biochem, cell and molbio. The one that i decided to buy was the www.grebio.com site. I don't regret buying the ebooks, but i gotta warn u that the summary ebook they sell is not gonna replace normal reading of the textbooks. Yet, the summary ebook was handy on the day of exam... Anyways, good luck...
