Hey all,

I'm applying to the Fall 16 class and the last thing I need to do is take my GRE, I'm taking it in like 2 weeks but I just wanted any advice on anyone that has taken it? I freaked out so I signed up for Kaplan, Magoosh, and I got their books and the ETS manual. I am studying like everyday but I'm still averaging about 151V-148Q, a lot of my schools want that 150-150. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Hey, I am in the same situation as you. Being that we are taking the test real soon I think the best thing we can do is just make sure we are WELL rested and have a good meal on test day. One important thing I noticed while taking practice tests is that you have to have the stamina to last 4 hours of an exam. I took an exam once while I wasn't in the greastest mindset because I was tired and my score dropped significantly. So I would just make sure your body feels ready to tackle that exam. Of course continue to study as well!

Definitely! Ill keep that in mind for sure, my test is at 8:00 AM so that'll be fun, waking up at 6!

Anyone have any thoughts on Manhattan Prep's free practice test vs ETS practice test and the real test? Is Manhattan easier and ETS a bit more difficult? I'm scoring low in Verbal now...what are good materials to study for it?

From what a lot of people have told me, the ETS practice exams are fairly similar to the actual exams. Who knows whether or not you will score the same but I think it'll definitely be a good indicator. The good thing is, you still have a couple of weeks to study. I'm taking it this Friday and I don't feel ready at all. As for study materials, I've been using the Princeton Review book. I have also taken 3 practice exams so far, two from Princeton Review (1st try: Q-147, V-147, 2nd try: Q-149, V-148) and one from the ETS Powerprep II software (Q-152, V-152). I know these scores aren't something to brag about but I've noticed that practicing helps a lot. Work on the questions that are giving you problems and I'm sure your scores will improve. Good luck!

Don't worry if you don't get the exact scores that the schools are expecting. The school that I got accepted had a 150v 150q 4.5AW average, but I had a 145v, 157q, 4.0AW and still got in. I also got into another school that wanted a 154v 154q 4.5AW so hey, don't stress too much about that. Just aim for 300 average (if you feel confident that your whole application is strong) and 4.0AW.

Hi Romazicon, did those schools you got into have 150v 150 q listed as a requirement? I'm retaking, but I got a 149V 154Q 4.0 writing on my first try. But I saw that most schools have 150 as a minimum so that's why I'm retaking.

I don't know about required. I was the minimum "considered" but I still got an interview and accepted to both. I did have a 4.0 and 500 hrs combined in 3 settings including outpatient orhto, acute care, and sports peds plus 3 reference letters from alumns and an exphys prof.

I also did pretty bad on the GRE the first time I took it ( 147V/152Q). The second time I took it is studied with the official ETS book and Benchprep and used the Magoosh flash cards (free) on my phone. My big focus was on doing better on the verbal. The BIGGEST thing that helped me was the 4 full length tests that came with the ETS book (2 in the book 2 on the disk). If you can train your mind to endure the 4 hour test and broaden your vocab to words you'll never use then you'll be good. I took full length practice tests twice a week for the 2 weeks preceding the test. I also looked at the flash cards every night before I went to bed. Additionally, I think knowing what to expect at the testing center the second time around helped me tremendously. I ended up getting a 155V and 158Q the second time. Good Luck!

How long did you give yourself to study for the second time around? That's an awesome improvement!

I was pretty hell bent on doing better because I was so mad at myself for doing bad the first time. I usually do well on standardized tests, but the GRE is pretty tough. I took it again a month after I took it the first time. Some people may need more time though. Everyone is different. I felt that I couldn't do much more studying for a standardized test than I could have in that month. There's only so much you can do. I took it for the second time last week, and I had finals for my summer classes this week. It was definitely a lot of stuff going on. But I wanted to have it all done before I went back to school so that I wouldn't have to worry about getting parts of my application done anymore. As soon as my AW score comes back and I get my summer class grades finalized I'll be able to finally actually apply and just play the waiting game.
