Hi there,

I'm planning on using my winter break to study for the GRE. I have a total of 5 weeks during winter break, and maybe 6-7 weeks between when I start to study and the GRE examination. I still need to sign up for a Jan or first week in Feb seat. I won't be working, and can devote at least 4-8 hours a day to studying for the GRE on weekdays.

I have a GRE prep book
1000 GRE word flashcards
a GRE math problems book

Any advice? Is this sufficient? Any essential items that I need for GRE prep?

Thanks!

I think it depends on your study skills. For me 5 weeks was enough. However, I did fail to study for the essay portion and did not do well there. Make sure you spend some time reviewing sample essays and practicing your own too! I highly recommend magoosh.com for studying. It is an awesome study tool. Plus all the practice questions are online so you get solid practice using that format. Good luck!

I think 5 weeks at 4-8 hours/day is almost excessive for the GRE. Unlike tests like the MCAT or LSAT, the GRE doesn't require a lot of specific knowledge. I didn't study at all and had a few other issues going on and I still scored decently. Assuming you are a good standardized test taker, you should do fine.

I studied for about a week and a half and did fine. You should take a baseline test to see how much you need to improve first. It's pretty basic stuff, shouldn't take much studying.
