I have a quick question about submitting GRE scores -

Most programs give you an institution code but no word about department code. Should I look up the correct department code via ETS and submit it to the department, or not? Thanks!

I don't think it's absolute necessary, but I would, as its fairly easy to do.

Thanks! I was wondering because they don't specify it, so I just wanted to make sure the app wouldn't go the wrong place if I did put in code. But it sounds like it is best to put in a department code to avoid GRE scores getting lost?

As far as I know, departments don't have codes beyond the institutional codes. You're technically applying to a school (an academic division) within an institution (e.g., the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences in X University), not the department, so your scores get sent to the school. The school also admits you (your letter of admission will be from the Graduate School, not the department). Just make sure you have the right school code, rather than the institution's business school or something like that. The school makes the GRE scores accessible to the departments.

Sometimes you do have to include it. I'd carefully read the application instructions and application for a school, and if they do not mention the dept code anywhere, then just submit with the institution school. Some programs do need the dept code, so do enter it if it's on the instructions. If you're unsure, just shoot an email to the application email they generally provide.

Ah, I think I misunderstood the original question - sorry OP, and thanks, Lisa!

I thought the question referred to individual department codes unique to the specific school, but I realize the question was about the generic department codes (e.g., unique school code + generic department/major field code for all clinical psych programs). http://www.ets.org/s/gre/pdf/dept_major_field_codes.pdf

No problem! The whole thing is confusing, to be honest.

Sorry I removed this post, I put this on the wrong forum.
