GRE: Verbal Help/Suggestions

Any suggestions on how I improve my verbal section on the GRE? I already have magoosh and have been using there vocab apps, so other anything suggestions would be great!

This is a good thread with tips. It's more about how to attack certain types of questions. It's in the MCAT section but it should apply to GRE as well.

Verbal Tip o' The Day

I was more concerned with improving my math score, so I didn't spend much time actively studying for the verbal section. Surprisingly, my verbal score improved much more than my math. I drive 30-45 minutes to school or work each way. Everyday I listened to scholarly audiobooks, stuff I am interested and engaged in, but literature with big words. This helped improve my vocabulary significantly. Besides the audiobooks, I downloaded the Magoosh vocabulary builder app. It's kind of like a matching game. I learned most of the words. When I took the GRE a few weeks ago, there were very few words that really stumped me. Hope this helps!

What helped me improve my score 8-9 points was using the magoosh verbal flash cards. I memorized as many of the words as possible and that helped me significantly.

I highly recommend magoosh to improve both your verbal and math scores. I raised my verbal score by 7 points and my math by 8 points in 3 weeks of studying using only magoosh.

I signed up on their website, costs about 100 dollars, and I used their free vocab app as well. I focused more on the videos they supply you with and did not memorize much vocab at all. Also took a ton of practice tests, probably once every 2-3 days to keep track of my progress.

Thanks for the advice! I already memorized 700 words from magoosh out of the 1,000. I just didn't memorize/study the advanced words which I probably will start soon.

I already have magoosh I try to take 2 test a week. But I still suck at verbal. I put a lot more focus on the Quant section since I haven't been the greatest at math but now the roles are reversed. Hoping with more time my verbal will increase. Thanks for the advice tho! I appreciate it!

I wish I could have memorized more. If you haven't yet, definitely take a practice test (either magoosh or ETS) and see what the hardest part about the verbal section is for you. You definitely don't want to just memorize more words if you also have a weakness with identifying themes/answering the questions about the passages (or weakness in another area). After you identify where your weaknesses are, make sure to tailor your studying to that, then take another practice test a few days later to see if you are studying the right way for you.
