So I am in the process of arranging all of my year 3 rotations (everything from FP to surgery) in the Phoenix, AZ area. Does anyone have any recommendations based on great learning experiences or quality attendings?

WS - Okay, you've got my attention.

The obvious questions: What do you do? and where?

Oh c'mon...you want me to make it that easy for you? 😀

I'm a general surgeon. All I do now is breast surgery so not eligible for a 3rd year core rotation, but I've had students and residents rotate for electives.

My office is in Peoria.

Darn... I thought I landed a surgery rotation! Any recommendations for good 3rd yr. surgery rotations around town?? Thanks!

Let me know the requirements of the rotation (ie, length, what you have to see [ie, can it be surgical subspecialties or just straight up gen surg]) as I know several general surgeons/gen surg groups around town albeit none in Mesa area.

Doesn't your school have groups that are already established for rotations?

Finally, you guys sort of get shafted during your rotations by not having anything really set up. I've heard many complaints that the students don't pre-round or post-round, don't know the patients, don't have an assigned rotation/surgeon, etc. These are not just complaints frm the surgeons but the students as well. I've had several just hanging around the hospital come and scrub in with me as they don't really have a schedule.

You don't have to work 120 hours per week but it really dilutes the surgical experience when all you do is go to the OR and do no office work, peri-operative care, have no real supervisor, mentor, etc.

Anyway, let me know what I can do to help.

Our rotations are 4 weeks, and are supposed to be general surgery. I actually live in Chandler, but am prepared to go anywhere around town to get the best experience.

As far as established rotations; the rotations that are pre-arranged for me are in Tucson, due to the affiliation with the cummunity health center there (don't ask 🙂) I have chosen to forgo those rotations and arrange my own in Phx due to my family situation (wife and daughter living here while wife completes doctorate program in Tempe).

I want to have the most comprehensive learning experience I can; pre-op, OR, post-op follow up, the works. I would regret a rotation where I ended up standing around or just being a fixture in the OR like the students you describe. If there are any rotations that you know of that could offer me 4 weeks of comprehensive learning in an environment conducive to student participation under the guidance of a skilled attending with enthusiasm for teaching, I would be forever greatful.🙂

Thank you.

Mesa, Chandler...its all the same to me (I live in the NE and work in the NW end of the Valley). 😉

They can be at allopathic hospitals right?

I'll ask around for you...when would you be looking at doing the rotation?

Surely you have more than 4 weeks total of surgery required. Do you have options for the other weeks? (the shortest Core Surgery rotation I've ever heard of was 6 weeks and the longest 12 weeks; many of us had 8 weeks - 4-6 weeks of gen surg, 2-4 weeks of subspecialties).

Thank you. Yes, allopathic hospitals are fine.

My timing is flexible. Since surgery is one of the hardest rotations to acquire, I can work my others around it. The ideal situation would be a 4 week block starting sometime March to June 2010.

Our schedule has 4 weeks of surgery only, but we have 6 weeks of electives to work with. So if you come across a rotation that is alloted for 6, or incorporates some subspecialty work, I can mix the time with my elective requirements, and make it work.

Thank you again.

Give me a few more days. My grandmother died this morning, so I haven't much time over the weekend as I have to travel out of state.

Really only 4 weeks? Wow...I cannot imagine any of the Cores being only 4 weeks long. But I'll see what I can find out for you.

WS-

My heartfelt condolences on your loss. Of course, take all the time that you need. I appreciate anything you can help me arrange, and if 6 weeks is all that is available, I will happily take it, and call the extra 2 weeks an 'elective'.

Thank you again and all the best to you and your family.

WS -

Just wanted to say than you again and let you know that I managed to line up a rotation with a surgeon in your neck of the woods (Glendale). Maybe you know her: Yaritza Perez-Soto. So it all worked out. Thank you again for offering your help.

All the best,

Adam

I've met her at a Banner Thunderbird Tumor Board. New to town. Hope it goes well.
