Unless you are a Greek national with superb qualifications, you can cross off Greek schools from your list. According to Greek friends of mine, admission is super competitive. To my knowledge, there are no English programs.

It is so competitive that I know Greeks that cannot even get in. They go somewhere else in Europe then go back to Greece for residency.

Wow is it that bad? I lived in Greece for 2 years actually and became a legal resident. Ok so dont to med school in Greece. But can you do med school in U.S. and practice in Greece? Would it only be a pew tests/exams? Or you are not allowed unless you have Greek-med education?

If you wish to practice in Greece, you'd probably be best served by completing your medical education somewhere in Europe.

However, that's not a guarantee of getting a residency in Greece as my friends tell me that there are more graduates than spots (you'll find many Greeks in places like the UK pursuing post-graduate training, because they get tired of waiting for a spot at home to open up.)

No, not necessarily, because some of my Greek friends plan on completing residencies elsewhere in Europe (UK) or even the U.S.;

However, from what I understand, connections and access to capital is what is most important in the private field. Without those, one might be stuck in the underfunded (their words, not mine) public system.

ok, isma3, i have a lot of family in greece, including several cousins who want to do medicine, however, because it is VERY difficult "ya3ni, mumkin musta7iil" to get in, they went to other countries in Europe which teach in english. 1 of my cousins is actually in Slovenia now studying, when she is finished she will return to younan and practice... as for the extra examinations for licensing in younan- i am not sure. anyways, good luck

1st no English programs in Greece
2nd cutthroat competition to get into Greek programs (I got in, but I went to high school there and spent a lot of money on tutoring for the entrance exams)
3rd even if you got in, there is no way to do your postgraduate training in Greece unless you are willing to wait around for years doing low paying and degrading work (This is due to a huge oversupply of physicians, since almost everyone who fails to get in a med school in Greece just goes in the Balkans or in Italy for undergraduate studies and returns for postgraduate training in Greece. I am doing my postgraduate training in the UK and considering the US- if I don't manage to get a number here- for precisely that reason)
4th even if you somehow manage to deal with all of the above or do all of your training elsewhere, Greece will probably be a pretty pitiful place to practice in the near future (if it isn't already). This enormous oversupply of MDs is leading to a very rapid degradation (financial and MORAL) of the medical profession. The only reason that doctors still miraculously manage to survive in Greece is the fact that Greece has the most privatized health system in Europe (kind of like the US).

thank you all for your reply guys. I really want to practice in Greece. I will be visiting in this upcoming August for a whole month. I love the country too much and just want to spend the rest of my life their. 🙂

Hello! and greetings to my friend ptca 😉

Well if you gratuated from a foreign medical school you will have to take the doatap exams. Something like licencing exams, only for those who finished med school outside the European Union.

The doatap (ex-dikatsa) exams have tests for IM, General Surgery, Paediatrics and i think that pharmacology and some others will follow after some years.

DON'T even think about doing your residency in greece. There are NO exams for getting in a residency program, but they're HUGE waiting lists (2-12 years depending on the specialty) and as ptca said, while waiting for your turn to come, there are some crappy jobs you can do...

If you have finished specialty in the states, you have to make an application to the general council for health, for your residency years to be recognised. If they are you just have to take an oral exam for you to be certified (everyone and the greek residents have to do it). If your residency years are not recognised, because of the variation between greece and the states (eg. IM in greece is 5 or 6 years i'm not sure, peds are 4 years etc) you will be ordered to do the extra residency years in greece and then take the exams.

These what you have to do only to start practising. The difficult part as a physician in Greece is finding a real job... and connections are the best way to do it...

ps. Gaining entrance in greek medical schools is extremely difficult. The ones who get in (like me and ptca 😛 lol) score 18,8/20 and more in the general exams the last year of high school... and many go to the balcans and italy...

Although i think that for foreign nationals, who didn't go a greek high school and have good command of the greek language, the exams for med school are really easy...
