It's good that "the Anesthesiologist didn't pass the NG tube" and the Surgeons had to do it on the latest episode. 🙄

Too bad they couldn't remember what the per kilo dose of Propfol was... lol.

Oh and let the record reflect that I'm only watching cause my girlfriend loves it and I was drunk after a drink up with the Rugby team 😀

I remember watching a little snipit of that episode. Here was the interaction

Nurse: The pts bp was dropping
Woman Surgeon: Push Albumin and IV fluid
Nurse: OK pt stabilized

Me: ? WTF, isn't that an anesthsiologists job

I don't watch the show but its definatly descrimatory against anesthesiologist, as are most medical shows these day. Meh, it comes w/the territory. You don't here Peyton Manning thanking his lineman when they win, only blames em when they lose.

In a world full of stupid medical shows, Grey's Anatomy is the most stupidest.

Guns- next time drink more with the ruggers so you pass out on the couch instead of being forced to watch that drivel. I too know the pain of being subjected unwillingly to it, and it kills me everytime. Seriously, I don't care which intern is sleeping with which Dr. McIdon'tgiveas#!t.

Scrubs is the be all and end all of medical television.

Duly noted - vaster amounts of alcohol will be consumed. 👍
Agreed, Scrubs is da bomb.

I actually like the show. You just need to totally divorce yourself from reality. 🙂 Seriously, I don't expect shows like that to be realistic. I get reality everyday. And Scrubs is awesome!!

I'm glad to see that even though there is griping about the show here, it's limited to griping on a message board and nothing more. A good friend of mine is a nurse and she said that there are Nursing Organizations that start letter writing campaigns to the show and call for boycotts because nurses aren't portrayed acurately! Anesthesists don't come off very good either, but then, the show isn't about them. Just like it isn't about nurses. Obviously, they want the major characters doing the cool stuff. It's just TV! ;-)

Good for your friend; I agree - real-life nurses are not that hot.

How is a letter gonna help that?

dc

I don't see many surgical interns (or many students/interns/residents/attendings for that matter) that look like Katherine Heigl or Ellen Pompeo. Sandra Oh on the other hand does portray the upper echelon of attractive female physicians well.

Most medical shows are unenjoyable by anyone in the medical field save for Scrubs. Does Cook County really have CPB and perfusionists on standby in their trauma bays like they portray on ER?

HA! Some are...

I'm not sure if I was clear on what I was saying though...she is disgusted that so-called profession organizations advocate writing protest letters to a TV show because of how her profession is portrayed! It's a TV SHOW!!!

You're right, letter writing isn't going to help anything except make your profession look dumb. With a big nursing shortage going on, a professional nursing organization has nothing better to do that whine about how they come off on a TV show?

Grey's - cheesy soap opera with some really bad medical plot lines at times

House - banned from my television just bad

Scrubs - the definition of funny

scrubs > simpsons (dr. Nick)> house > er > chicago hope > general hospital > teletubbies > barney ......... > greys anatomy

thank you

At least you know when you're watching scrubs that it's fantasy lol.

JD! What are you doing?

Oh, jus' breakin' some bad news, circus style....

I tell people that scrubs is more realistic than grey's anatomy and ER.

Grey's anatomy doesn't even try to be realistic. I don't think the writers have ever even been to a hospital.

I love how the residents eat breakfast at their house in the morning and the sun is out. As an intern, I didn't even think the sun rose in the morning anymore.

don't you also love how they've been interns for like two years ...

I don't know where you guys are training, but my surgery internship in Seattle is just like the show.

kidding

Whenever I get a chance to leave the state, you wouldn't believe how many people ask if my residency is just like the show.

The ASA has already written letters about two episodes. One where the anesthesiologist abandons the patient with the grenade in his chest cavity, and the one where the anesthesiologist is drunk and falls asleep in the OR.

on Lost tonight the patient woke up during spine surgery - the doc's reply "I'm a spine surgeon, not an anesthesiologist."

that's a little better.

now for the patient not being intubated and just waking up and talking with an open back during surgery... well.. have to keep the plot moving somehow...😀

and for the record, a couple of surgery residents where i did my clinicals as a medical student were so hot they made all guys in a 10 foot radius lose 20 IQ points and fight with each other. god i LOVE smart egotistical women with an insane work ethic. it's a problem of mine.:meanie:

You must also love pain...😀

House is amazing...IF you play the House drinking game.

1 drink for when the docs do something a specialist or surgeon would do
1 drink for a factual inaccuracy
1 drink for a mention of vasculitis
1 drink when House pops a pill
etc, etc

Yes, but you'll note that Juliet, a (presumed) OB/GYN, was giving the anesthesia. I'd rather have the ortho!

Hmm. I'll have to try this. Mr Orthonut is addicted to House ( 🙁 sucks for me, blech)

What on earth is with their obsession with vasculitis? they think EVERYONE has it.

Grey's Anatomy is the bomb!!! 🙂 If you take it as pure Drama, then it's a fun show to watch. I'm not worried about the Anesthesiologist's crap because that's how some people perceive us and well... if it really bothers you, then you probably shouldn't get into the specialty.

As for ASA writing to them, I think it's almost a given and almost expected that they would. Whether it makes a difference... doubtful.

Now, Scrubs is the bomb and I agree, it probably is a more realistic representation of the daily lives of interns/residents than a lot of other shows out there.

I guess I'm just happy that medicine is considered such an exciting career as to make it one of the mainstay program of many of the largest TV networks out there. Makes me feel special 😀

As for surgery resident's not being that hot... well, I kind of disagree because I've definitely met and worked with some really attractive ones. Most of them were even nice to boot. 🙂 However, I definitely think there is a higher percentage of attractive ladies in our field.

So I love this show and I love the music just as much as the plot itself.
Tonight Patrick Watsons song 'The Great Escape' is being played. Everyone needs to look into him, he is definetly one of the best new artists of the past few years.

YAY FOR PATRICK WATSON!

I listened to a few seconds of the song and determined that you are a chick.

Now we can add Scrubs to the list of shows attacking anesthesiologists. Patient asks, "Has anyone ever died with this surgery?". Turk responds, "Yeah, two years ago a patient died from a reaction to the anesthestic."

And somehow, several concurrent threads in this forum come together to confirm one point- we get no respect from the common public.

yeah but that was blaming the drug not the anesthesiologist. should just reinforce how important it is to have a physician supervising if something goes south. 😉
