Is anyone else's hospitals changing their policy on the annual growth media challenge? My hospital isn't allowing us to do these on our own, now the assistant director is gonna be watching us during the growth media challenge.

I imagine it's because most of us cheat and use excess materials (20 ml x 1 ml injections to make, I'll use 20 separate needles and syringes), or just grab a 20 ml syringe and do it in one shot to guarantee that nothing grows.

My site the Pharmacist in charge of renewals watches every step. Luckily I am good friends with her so she usually just watches me get set up and then leaves me alone to actually do the tests. I dislike being watched while I work lol

I know, I'm afraid that I'm gonna be dripping sweat all over the hood. And I know my hand/finger placement on the needle may not be kosher since I go for optimal grip. That's why I never reuse syringes, because I know I'm gonna end up touching the plunger. (I use my finger as a guard against the syringe retracting. I never insert air into the vial when it's a small vial.)

Plus, I never ever re-cap the needles. Always toss that **** out uncapped.

Media fills are supposed to represent the most complex task possible. That is why they require you to use one needle/syringe. Yes, we don't actually do it that way ever, but if your technique works for the media fill it will work for the highest risk sterile product. Every media fill I have ever done has been directly observed.

Really? Our media fill kit instructions says to use 3 spikes, 3 syringes, and 3 needles. Maybe different kits have different instructions?

Really. Every one I have ever done has the vial transfer part as something like "Take one mL out of vial one put in vial 2, Take 1 mL out of vial 2 and put in vial 3... etc" The last one I had to do was something like 15 steps before I was allowed to use a new needle and syringe.
