Just discovered this group called the Global Surgical Medical Group. Does anyone have more information on exactly what they do? With all the negative comments surrounding HPSP lately due to the ambiguity of the new system, would it be possible to join GSMSG as an alternative (after having completed med school/residency)? I understand that GSMSG wouldn’t provide a scholarship the way HPSP does, but I’m not so concerned about the money as I am the chance to serve. This being said, I’m not sure if HPSP is a good option right now considering the DHA shift and the volatile geopolitical climate. Perhaps reserves would be a better option?

Did you bother to google them and read their website? Because it pretty much spells out exactly what they are.

Yes, thank you. Perhaps I worded the question poorly. No need to be rude, I was just wondering if anyone had personal experience to share, especially with how it compares to things like HPSP.

I'm seriously not trying to be rude. If you read the website (in full disclosure I had not ever heard of the group until you asked so I went and googled it), then I'm having a hard time with your line of questioning.

They are a charity group that takes already trained physicians and essentially does "medical missions." It is very Doctors Without Borders sounding to me. It has nothing to do with paying for medical school. It has nothing to do with the military. They are not officially associated with the US Government.

Based on that it doesn't have any real comparison to HPSP. It seems like it compares mostly to Doctors Without Borders.

Thanks for the clarification. I guess I got confused because they said they drew mostly from veterans, so I thought it was some sort of military-affiliated group.
