I've heard tell of schools that give automatic interviews if you have certain numbers. I was just wondering if this is real or just another thing that seems to good to be true about the med school application process.

Does anyone know of schools that do this?

I think Michigan will if you have certain numbers and came from certain schools.

I think JAMP programs may also have such stipulation. For example, correct me if I am wrong, but Rutgers has a link with UMDNJ-RWJMS where if you go to rutgers for pre-med and maintain certain gpa and class ranking, you may get an interview there on the spot. I believe there is one fore drexel too.

If one hasn't applied to college yet but knows med school is something they would like to do in the future, then one should consider such JAMP programs.

University of Washington does for the WWAMI program. But if everyone is interviewing it doesn't really do much for you... You're still competing with the same crowd.

Ahh perhaps I'm mistaken then. I think they used to up the stats for the auto interview every year so they'd interview about the same number of applicants. Maybe they scrapped it.

For OOS, it has to be at least higher than 3.6 and 34 MCAT. I originally applied to UTSW with 3.6/34 last June and didnt get an invite till the day after I found out my new MCAT score of 38 in October.

Indiana interviews all in-state applicants with a cumulative 3.2 and an MCAT with 25 or higher(no individual score under 6).

edit: looking back at my mdapps, i now understand why indiana didn't even let me fill out a secondary.

I know someone at an ivy who was told by an adcom member that undergrads from that school get an auto-invite to the med school if they have good numbers.

Cant hurt since the TX apps are pretty cheap. Plus, maybe you have something that could help you that I didnt. For example, I never did research and they are a research minded school.

The univ. of nebraska also gives basically all in state an interview

Iowa advised me that they have this system; their system last year was 10+ section score, and I recall the gpa cutoff being 3.7 or 3.75. Changed this past season (for the "automatic invites" to 10+ per mcat section and 3.8+ gpa; but there was some flexibility later in the interview season below these "automatic invite" figures.

does anyone here know what the "automatic" OOS cutoffs are for the following schools? not to say that they'd give interviews automatically, but any one know any specific cutoff numbers for the past year or so?

I know EVMS sends secondaries to all OOS who have sci gpa > 3.44, and MCAT > 29 or so.

There standard isn't just a GPA and MCAT cutoff, however. It's more convoluted--you need to be above average for their standard applicant pool in x out of 6 fields (like hours volunteering, physician shadowing, research...).

Keep in mind that it's not as "too good to be true" as you might think. In my experience, if you read the Utah thread, you see why...they end up interviewing many people who are far more qualified than those they accept...so why did they interview them? b/c their rubric told them to?

In that case, the rubric didn't account for things like commitment to practice in underserved parts of the state. I imagine the same will be true for any other schools that are the only one in their state.

George Mason University in Fairfax Virginia has a program with GW which is pretty sweet. Guaranteed Acceptance to the program if you apply during your sophmore year of college and keep a 3.6 or above GPA, you don't even have to take the MCAT. They also have another program with VCU which is similiar but you need something like a 24 or above on the MCAT.

No, they're going to a more "holistic" approach, ostensibly to give people with lower numbers but great experience/research equal footing with the robots with high stats who would otherwise take up all the interview spots...

...honestly I think they just got flooded with 3.5/30's and didn't want to deal with the uni-dimensional candidates who they'd basically be wasting an interview on...
