Have anybody considered getting a marriage license from a person out of state to get in state tuition (I'm looking at you, Texas), then plan a divorce after graduation? No ceremonies, relationships, purely for financial purposes.

So, I changed my first post since nobody either knew or wanted to answer. This should be more fun! 🙂

A contract marriage? They're endemic in the military.

What's the benefits of a marriage license in the military?

Don't live in the barracks, everyone is slightly (only slightly, especially if you live off base) more understanding when you aren't on time, you are less likely to be called in to do stupid stuff or stay late.

Wow, never knew that. Most of my friends (guys and gals) are in the military so I'll give them a heads up! 🙂

Edit - I want to add that a contract marriage license would theoretically be a solution to some of the biggest problems stated in this forum, namely the opportunity to apply to a specific school that's not OOS friendly or simply a big in-state tuition discount.

All those headaches to save a few thousand and what if the woman turns out to be a wack job good luck trying to get out of that one bro. I know some schools allow you to change residency after you've been there for a year

Which is one of the major cons to contract marriages in the military.

Lol I wouldn't mind if it's a few thousand. But say you get a license with someone from Texas - can you imagine paying less than 200k for 4 years of tuition, fees, supplies, and living expenses? I know many on this forum have to deal with 400k for their entire education simply because they lost the geography lottery. Plus, I read of cases on SDN like this one Canadian guy who's financial support didn't allow him to attend a USA school, even when he got in. Last time I checked, the school extended his start one more year for him to get his finances in order. That's one really really sad story and something I don't wish upon anybody.

Yes there are schools that let you change, but most of them are still expensive. And that's if you get into them, considering everybody knows about them and are applying there by default (ohio, etc., that's the only one at the top of my head atm in case anybody wants to know of one).

Yes, but then again...it is the military...

All jokes aside - it's a risk, but people don't take risks without a reason.
