Gunner Training?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Gt just added Another card -_-

Good news everyone. I managed to get yesterday's a>600 qs down to 160

GTP, now that you are back in school how many cards are you banking a day? Also, how much time are you committing to GT study time vs class study time? This may be premature if you just started this week but thought I'd ask.

dmason, I had the same question for him! We started school this week too and Ive been trying to get up at 5:30 and get at least half of the days cards done. Talk about a rude awakening!

Hey bchandler. Is there any way that you could inform us of when the pricing will change in advance, so that maybe we can utilize the pricing plans for a little while longer? As a gesture towards SDN fans, is there any way you could show us some love? I'm going to be starting M1 in a month, and I plan to be using a month trial, after which, I was planning to sign up for a year. If you go monthly, I may have to to look at the pricing, and delay GT until later on in the year.

@bluv1212, thanks to your and everyone else's great feedback, we decided to keep our pricing the same for a while longer (even when Firecracker is ready for prime-time and the Firecracker payment system replaces GT's payment system). To keep things simple, however, were going to remove the recurring subscription plan that cost $29/month as well as the 3-month plan option.

We thought a lot about what you guys said and changed our plans accordingly. We want to reward people who want to sign up for a year in advance and keep our prices down as long as possible. We will consider raising them after we integrate 1,000+ USMLE style questions. When we are full replacement for FA and UWorld we figure we can justify charging more to pay back our investors. 🙂

And, we always want to show you guys love! Our SDN Firecrackers are the bomb! To that end, I thought I'd tell you guys first that, someday in Aug. 7th, we're going to be posting a free month coupon on the Firecracker fan page. The catch is that the coupon will only be valid for a day or two so we recommend you like the page to make sure you see the code in your Facebook newsfeed. We thought this would help atone for our suggesting that we may be increasing our prices. 🙂

Truth is if we can get more than just all of you super smart and forward-thinking med students and IMGs to use Firecracker, we can more easily keep our prices down. So please tell your classmates that Firecracker isn't only for the super-hardcore med student! We can't wait until we get our 1,000+ USMLE style questions hooked up to all their relevant concepts. That way you guys will be able to review, say, 500 concepts with 50 questions as opposed to 500... and be able to practice applying your knowledge on USMLE- and Shelf-like questions at the same time! Kinda like killing 10 birds with 1 stone.

Wow, that sounds brutal to me cause I'm not an early morning person but I appreciate the dedication. How many questions are you reviewing a day and how many cards are you attempting to bank? I have a month before school starts for me and I'm trying to get the number of questions I have daily to a manageable level (100-150) by the time I start and bank M2 material as I see it through the year. I am really hoping not to commit more than 2 hours to GT during M2 because the class load is going to be a lot by itself.

It's a shame that a product with a basis in advanced planning and consistent, long-term hard work doesn't reward the users willing to put in the cash for 12- or 24-month plans.

@withrye, we really appreciate your note here. We agree with you 100% and that's why I just told @bluv1212 that we decided to keep our pricing the same for a while longer (even when Firecracker is ready for prime-time and the Firecracker payment system replaces GT's payment system). To keep things simple, however, were going to remove the recurring subscription plan that cost $29/month as well as the 3-month plan option (which hasn't been there for a while already).

Thanks for the great thoughts; you reminded us of why we did multi-month plans in the first place!

Im on the verge of skipping out on class totally in order to get GT done even if its upwards of 300. I am going to try to make as many passes of Pathoma as possible in the early part of an organ system block and then bank GT for that unit in Path(see the Pathoma thread about the guy that went through the pathoma videos 7 times in a block). Im putting GT on a pedestal and I know my grades may(probably will) take a hit. But, I think its better for the long run.

We can assume the current strict recall based question bank will still be there right?

Also, when will there be an Ipad/Iphone app?

Thanks for telling us that info

Hi @devils143, yes, the 13,000+ recall questions will still be there! Regarding an iPad/iPhone app - we're going to first make sure that Firecracker works really well on the iPad and iPhone Safari web browser and then look into a native app. Is the main reason why you want a native app so that you guys can do review questions without an internet connection? If you could tell me that 1 most important thing you want to do on the go, that would be really really helpful! Thanks!

You're welcome! Remember, we're always at chat at firecracker dot me as well if you want to reach out and chat with us. 🙂

$40 a month? Getting rid of long term subscriptions? The whole point of GT is long-term repetition. I fear you are losing touch with your fanbase here.

Thanks for the note, @Brotato! We agree with you and don't want that to happen. Thanks for all the great suggestions you guys. We just hired a new (and awesome) engineer today who will help us get more great tech to you guys (and we are always hiring new editors/authors).

Please Please Please make it so we can review and do all the cards within 1 subsection only. Right now there is an option to do all cards from say biochem but not subsections from biochem - like all cards of cellular metabolism only. This seems like something that could be implemented in an hour or less just by adding the subcategories to the "do all cards from xyz list". This would be a godsend for those of us upcoming MS2 so we can review for microbiology or just renal pathology etc... in addition to our daily cards. Thank you and great product!

Great suggestion @jhamaican! Nick is actually just finishing this in Firecracker right now! It's done, we're just making it zippy. You should be able to check it out on the Firecracker beta in a few days. And, we're also letting you guys do questions associated with specific topics as well, not just sub-subjects like cellular metabolism! 😀

Yeah i prefer to get back to you next week or the week after that when things are "normal" again. I've been moving so haven't really banked since Sunday.

I'd like to chime in with a thanks for the Firecracker responses. Individual responses to our concerns along with real change in the pricing structure restores my faith in the company's direction and customer care. This was highly appreciated.

1 - Yeah about the setting a cap for questions... doesn't that interfere with the concept/plan of spacing out and repeating things on an "optimized" schedule where you should be theoretically recalling important concepts? What happens if you set a cap, would things just be pushed back a day? Eventually that will build up.

2 - Currently when I'm banking cards and taking the quiz right after, I'm rating questions no more than a 3 and also adjusting when I want to see the card next (usually 1-2 days if it was a harder concept to memorize or 7 days max if it was easy). My intention was to account for short term memory helping me get through cards the first time, but is what I'm doing actually also interfering with the optimization of review schedule? Seems like I'm being counterproductive, though I'm not sure. More often than not I can rate a question a 4 or so, which means I don't see it for a week by default, and then I forget and have to give it a 1 or 2.

(And also... is that free month coupon valid for current subscribers?) :xf:

Bchandler, when will the shelf/step 1 style questions be put in place?

Hi @devils! We have around 500 already and should have 1,000 or so by the end of Aug. We will begin integrating them in a few weeks and you should start seeing them in Firecracker around mid Aug.

Thanks @withrye! Really appreciate the support and all the great ideas. Keep 'em coming! Once we're on the new Firecracker platform, you can all expect improvements to come MUCH faster than they have on GT. I'm literally sitting across from a great new engineer we just hired and we're looking for more developers to join us. And we've also built our content team substantially and I can't wait for you guys to see our USMLE style questions. They are authored by some of the top residents in the country and they are really really good. In concert with the rest of our program, they will really make things efficient and effective for any and everyone. Thanks!!!

someone pmed me asking for these. i personally dont have a clue what they mean. if one of u gets a chance, please explain in plain english why these graphs are useful.

it wouldnt let me upload the ps. here they are

background: i finished exams in june and banked over summer on breaks at work. banked 20-25 cards in the beginning, then 10-15, then 10 during the last 3 weeks or so. material got harder and i couldnt bank at the same rate. i banked for about 6.8 weeks. ms2 starts yesterday and im already behind. havent banked since sunday. hope to catch up this weekend. i tend to be very stingy with ratings. i only give a 4/5 if i know the material forward/backwards. i also tend to try to recall other things not asked in the question.

ie if a question asked what the treatment for t solium is, i recall it and then try to remember everything else it is used to treat.

GT says keyboard shortcut to goto next questions is the 'enter' key. Does that work for everybody.
I have to manually click next question. Enter doesnt seem to work.

Any suggestions?

Sometimes if your cursor is in the field to type a response it won't register. But if you hit TAB to shift it over to the part where you're rating your recall, then it works. Are the other keyboard shortcuts working for you?

Offline functionality would be killer!! Please do this. I use to be able to cache like 100 cards but now it only does 15-30.

It does for me, but I made my own shortcuts that simultaneously enters the number *and* goes to the next question.

If it helps anyone, whether left handed and want different shortcuts or just because, I'll share with you how you can choose your own keyboard shortcuts.

For example, I felt it would be more comfortable if the spacebar would show the answer, and j, k, l would score 1, 3, 4 *and* go to the next question without having to click enter.

So now I just go ... j... space... k... space... k... space.... etc. and it's very fast.

Here's how to do it:

1) Install AutoHotkey (free). Click the desktop icon to start it.
2) Right click on the little icon next to the clock and select "EDIT"
3) Paste the following (anywhere). Save. Reload.

SetTitleMatchMode, 2
#IfWinActive Mozilla Firefox

j::Send {1} {Enter}
k::Send {3} {Enter}
l::Send {4} {Enter}
Space::Right
return

Note that it only works on the browser you specify, which up there says firefox, but you can edit it.

You can also edit j, k, l, space up there for whatever key would work better for you.

I suggest you turn off AutoHotkey after your review session so you can use firefox normally, unless you choose a browser that you don't use for anything other than GT.

If we purchase the year-long GT subscription now, will we be grandfathered into a year-long subscription with Firecracker? Or will there be a fee to migrate all the data over?

Thanks,
~Kalyx

Is the migration assistant on Firecracker working for anyone else? I want to import my GT account but seems like it's not working.

(And also... is that free month coupon valid for current subscribers?) :xf:

In short, we will soon be giving you guys an option to migrate all of your GT data, months, etc. to Firecracker. If you don't want to, you can stay on GT as long as you understand that we won't be supporting GT going forward (but will instead be improving content, features, etc. on Firecracker). We figure that some of you may be in the middle of studying for a test so we wanted to give you the option to stay on GT if you wish for a while longer. We don't think it will make sense for you to want to do this but if you want to you can. 🙂

Along with the migration option, we will be switching out the payment system which will mean that all current coupons, free months, etc. won't work anymore. We will likely be building a new coupon system in the future so you guys can get free months for referring people, get free months when we post them, etc.

And, the free coupon we will post soon on our Firecracker fan page will indeed be valid for current subscribers! 🙂

Sorry! It's not going to work just yet! Will let you guys know when you can migrate! Sorry for the inconvenience. I'm literally sitting across from our guys who are working on it. Thanks!

A fee to migrate... hhhhmmm... why didn't we think of that. 😉 Just kidding! No fee whatsoever! Whatever months you get now will transfer over to Firecracker (if you get a recurring subscription we will contact you about getting more months since we won't be doing recurring subscriptions in Firecracker initially if ever). Thanks! 🙂

Yeah except now I lose all the free months I have built up. I've referred like 6 people so far who will be signing up

bchandler, quick questions...
1.) So I paid i think it was $250 when i bought GT in march for 15 months...when I transfer to FireCracker, I'm pretty sure I'll want to extend FC to another year to cover 3rd year so I was wondering how much this would basically cost and when I should sign up for the extension as a pre-existing GT member

2.) As far as transferring, can you guys please have the notes be transferred to as well and possibly have notes containing http:// references to be in blue hyperlink format so I can just click it? Theres just stuff I added and links I've referenced that I would love to keep

Another random post....but so I'm going off of what PeterParker had advised me about his plan. He basically did GT and UWorld (1 year) and Kaplan (easy/medium...he said in a pm the hard problems were futile and not usmle worthy) Qbank questions...I'm about to buy some stuff and money's not that much of an issue but I was wondering if it would be advisable to purchase UWorld + Kaplan QBank for a year? Those would probably be my Qbanks for the year and stuff I would hopefully do before exam time of each organ system block, but at the same time, I hope these are something doable.

In general, I think last year, I perused different review books for problems i.e.- kaplan, BRS anatomy, brsphysio but I think I'd like to get/stick with passes of true qbanks. I know people say save UWorld last, it won't make sense, etc... but I think doing a couple easier problems at night as a learning tool won't hurt and ultimately name's will help gauge my step performance...afterall people make multiple passes at UWorld...what do you guys advise? Sadly this will be on top of FC/GT but I'll prob have a cap at my daily workload

I'm actually planning the same thing @Transformers. I have GT now, will sign up for Kaplan QBank soon (likely tomorrow or so) and will use that for the first half of 2nd year. For the second half it will be UWorld.

i.e.
Now until Dec-ish: GT/Kaplan while annotating FA
Jan until test: FA/UWorld/GT

Yeah except now I lose all the free months I have built up. I've referred like 6 people so far who will be signing up

Hi @GTP - we got you covered here! We are planning on adding any unused months that you've earned to your membership and we will keep track of any new users who you've referred who join. So don't worry about that! And, of course as always, you can email us at chat at firecracker dot me or via the feedback link on the website.

Hi @Transformers (awesome name by the way), 1-year will cost the same in FC as it currently does in GT but we won't be supporting coupons initially so if you have any you'd want to apply them now.

We will likely increase our prices down the road but when we do it will be after we integrate at least the 500+ USMLE style questions we currently have and possibly after we provide an option to pay the same for the program without USMLE style questions (if you guys like this idea let us know; we see pros and cons. Con is that we believe in desirable difficulties and think USMLE style questions intertwined with your review sooner than most people typically do is a good idea. Check this out: http://www.psychologyinaction.org/2011/01/04/desirable-difficulties-in-the-classroom/)

Re: Notes - Firecracker uses Textile so that you guys can do pretty much whatever you want to the text. See here for examples (links, images, tables, etc.): http://redcloth.org/hobix.com/textile/

We think that if you previously had a link in your notes that it will then be clickable, but if you want to do something like this, then you will have to use Textile.

Cool 🙂

Do you have a tentative go-live/migration date for Firecracker? I'm a current GT user and am pretty excited about the new functionality.

Any experiences with using GT for 3rd year rotations? Never used GT before but after reading this sit I wish I had. Greatly appreciate it.

Hey guys, I just heard about this and I was wondering if there were any Ross students that have tried this and would be willing to share their experience. Also, if I have about 4 months before I plan on taking the USMLE, would this be enough time to benefit from GT? I've done about 60% of UWorld so far and plan on doing Kaplan Q bank next before taking a second pass at Uworld.

Any advice would be awesome, thanks!

You need to start gt at least at the very beginning of ms2 to benefit from it. 4 months is not high yield enough. You are better off with other resources.

well i'm at a caribbean medschool now, and 4 months would be the earliest i could take the step, and i could take it in 7 months (with the last 3 months completely done with m2 and no classes). would that sway the possible efficacy or would i still be better of sticking to uworld/kaplan q banks with kaplan lecture videos/pathoma etc. review material.

Can someone pls confirm again precisely when fc is coming out? Gt is really really pissing me off. I've had 400 qs daily in the past week. I don't want to start rating things a 5 cuz it will screw up things for me

Is there anyway to get rid of half these review qs? I don't like the idea of clearing reviews cuz I've done that last week and now I have 70-80 questions to do BEFORE my daily 400

F M L

Sorry for the harsh tone. I love gt but I'm burnt out. And I can't really take a day off lol

To the Ross student, I say stick with Goljan Pathoma, fa u world. Even Kaplan seems low yield at this point

As u can see from my previous post, gt can take up a significant amount of ur time. 7 months is not enough in my opinion. But that's up to u. U can bank 100% in 6 months, but ur mastery will likely suck ( <75%) and/or you will be spending at least 5 hours a day on gt.

GT is absolutely draining. Devoting 2 hours a day to bank 1st year material plus review questions(another 1.5hours). And its only the 1st week😱

I hear ya. I'm relatively new too, and my memory is getting WORKED. Though I like the feeling of keeping on top of my reviews with these facts and the progress works great as an incentive (liking the feeling of completing a subject by seeing that green bar fill up 😀). It's too early to tell how well facts are sticking, but I hope I can keep it up when I get deep into MS2 work. But I reeeeeally hope Firecracker's daily cap on questions works to some effect, in terms of not simply just DELAYING your workload and having it build up anyway. Maybe combine concepts into a USMLE-type question instead that covers multiple cards? *hint hint*

I'm at about 5.9/2.8 right now, lol. How are you personally progressing on 1st year stuff? Because it took me around 4 whole days to get through most of Biochem metabolism lol. I didn't realized how much I've forgotten...

is anyone else having trouble loading their daily schedule? I was able to do it until noon today but keeps saying the server is down....is the great migration happening?
