Thanks. Like I said, I've been through most sections of FA with my friends already as my school does each organ system, and there really isn't anything new in it. FA is the highest-yield for a reason, because it doesn't have anything other resources don't already have.

Right now during school, my time is 20% GT, 80% qbanks and other resources (Rx, Kaplan, USMLE easy, Pathoma). During Step1 study time I will taper off the GT and do UWorld a ton.

Anybody know if there is a way to remove a system from your daily review cards? I want to remove anatomy because it takes up a chunk of my time when I need to review other stuff

on gunnertraining, you can go to account-->reset account-->reset subject.
on FC you can unflag cards and since I don't use FC I do not know whether or not you can unflag an entire subject with one click.

The count is probably a little different in FC is all. About 95% mastery, although that might go down because I'm gonna start grading more strictly to make sure I really have the whole card down when the answer comes up.

I'm going to start a qbank in about a week. I won't know until then (plus some time before I try my first NBME) whether or not this has been particularly useful. I do know, however, that new lecture material seems old hat when it comes up, so that's a good thing?

Semi off-topic, but I might as well as you guys since we all frequent this thread...

...but do any of you guys have any interesting mnemonics or ways to memorize the musculoskeletal tumors highlighted by GT (e.g. osteoma, osteochondroma, osteosarcoma, etc.) in terms of the questions that typically ask "where [epiphysis/metaphysis/diaphysis], age group, and what kind of bones?"

That only one that stuck was osteoclastoma because it was practically the exception to everything: female, epiphysis.

I ended up trying out the icy method of using GT: I reset the subjects I had the highest % mastery in and am now working on only banking a few memorization-heavy subjects (eg microbio). I don't know whether it will work out, but I do have a lot more time for qbanks right now.

It's pretty amazing but even though I'm about 6 mos out and ~48% banked and 37% mastery I don't think that'll be enough time to review every single card 3-5 times - and know the material. There's just so much extra stuff GT puts in that it doesn't seem feasible. And if you try to bank fast it ends up hurting you on the daily review questions which you spend 2-3 hours on a day. Anyone feel the same or think its possible?

The way I'm currently going about it is actually cutting the daily review questions in half; do half in the morning, half at night (they usually average around 300 total, sometimes over 400 when I'm >10% unmastered). I try to get through them as fast as possible because if you nitpick every answer it will easily take 3 hours to do 100 questions. I spend max 1 hour on 100 questions.

Bank pretty heavily in GT (10+ cards in 2-3hours). Read over the section I did in GT in FA, then do U-world questions in tutor mode and annotating them while I go. On top of coursework, that is MORE than enough for board studying. I barely have any time left in the day.

Rant 562: Once again upset with the system and communication


After the christmas break and new years I decided to makeup for lost banking and banked heavily and since I thought Firecracker would soon be replacing gunnertraining I decided to put a lot of my notes directly into Gunner Training instead of making my usual Anki Cards.

Today I get an email saying my GunnerTraining notes were transfered over to Firecracker over a week ago, meaning all my new notes I added aren't in Firecracker... LOL! It would have been very nice if someone could have just sent an email saying what the date for transfer was so we didn't waste time adding notes.

Just my friggen luck, I don't even know which cards I added the notes to so I'm going to just go back to GunnerTraining + Anki on the side and give up on Firecracker.

Ugh! Thanks for the heads up! I didn't get an email at all, but now that I look, there is a notice in my firecracker inbox, which obviously I wasn't checking since I've been using GT :annoyed:

For those who have already taken the step, did you continue to use GT during your dedicated study period? I'm about 5 months out from the boards and I'm currently at 64/45 in GT. I've stopped using GT for past 3 months so I accumulated about 5k questions... which I'll slowly tackle them over the next month or so...

Started using firecracker lately. With my GT account transfer imminent, I decided to give it a try. Just wish I knew exactly when it's going to transfer.

FC isn't that bad, but I wish the "Gamification" aspect (%'s completed on each subject) would be implemented. And soon.

I thought about this too. I figure, if it's going to happen, I might as well get used to it NOW rather than later (i.e. relearning a system closer to test date).

How did you do it though? Did you migratre data? Because I don't really see a point without migration... but then I also don't want it to get messed up or locked out.

Also, ditto on the % completion bars. Deal breaker right there 😛

That quote is from Firecracker's blog. So it should be any day now.

How will we know when we've been transferred over? I'd hate to spend a few days doing quizzes and banking cards only to find out I'd already been migrated (as apparently happened with notes to someone else in this thread), and any work I'd done on GT after that point was not coming along to Firecracker.

So, as I wait for GT to start working again, I have a few questions for those of you who are currently using FC that used GT before for at least a moderate amount of time.

1st-Is there a way to quickly see how many questions there are for each card without "flagging" it and watching the number go up on the # of questions to do.

2nd-Is there any way at all to just see all the topics/cards in the section you are currently looking at without having to go back to the main screen?-ie. I'm in the cardio path section looking at a card and I want to quickly scan what the rest of the cardio path cards are-in GT you would simply click the "cardiology: Pathology" heading at the top and it would list the cards in that section. It seems like the only way to do this in FC is to go back to the main screen which is quite annoying and rather time consuming when switching back and forth a lot during studying.

I guess those are my 2 main questions for other users but I would also like to ask the devs to change some other things in FC that I really enjoy having in GT. Some of these may have been mentioned but the only one that comes to mind is the % completed in each section (which is HUGE for me)

1-Minor but...why is the clinical clerkship section in between step 1 basic sciences and step 1 organ systems-Not a deal-breaker to me but it's just annoying every time I look at it. Could we please get some organization and move clerkship to be below step 1 organ system on the main screen?

2-Does anyone else just dislike the new color scheme for the FC cards? They are so much more difficult to read for some reason. There is way way too much white on the page the cards do not "pop" like they do in GT. Get the blue background for each card back to make it easier/faster to read. I know FC has a very very light blue background once you expand the card but it does not help at all.

3-Along with the color scheme, why is the font changed in FC. Maybe its just my eyes but the font in FC is aweful to read for long periods of time. Maybe its just me but it feels like it actually takes me longer to read the cards in FC than it does in GT. This could be the because of the background color as well but I am 100% not a fan of the font in FC. It just doesn't have any style/character...

3-Why did you make it so hard to expand cards in FC. It seems like the only way to expand them is to click directly on the "more" which is really quite annoying and much much slower considering you have to click it a few times for each card to expand everything. Revert back to being able to click anywhere on the card and have it expand...

4-The topics flagged/total topics heading in the upper left of the screen is just demoralizing now because it includes clerkship questions (many of which are very similar/verbatim to basic science/organ system questions). Any way to be able to turn off the counting of the clerkship so it at least feels like I'm more than 20% done?

I guess that is about all I can think of right now and I apologize again if these have been mentioned before but whenever I use FC when GT is down to study I am constantly reminded how much I dislike the new set up of FC. I don't mean for this to be a "FC sucks" post either because I really really like GT/FC and will continue to use it pretty much no matter what happens but it would just be nice to see these changes to make the GT/FC experience more enjoyable.

Oh man, thought it was just me having problems because I've also had Internet problems. GT is there but loading really slowly.

I haven't spent much time with FC to be annoyed by looking at it, but I think it's pretty clean looking. The font seems nicer, but I can agree it's a bit too white. A splash of color might increase my productivity. But that's nit-picking.

The % complete, separation of Step 2 items, and the rest of the GT features missing are all I care about for now.

Also is anybody using FC actually using the fixed interval system? What kind of days do you have it set on?

I have the same list of grievances toward FC, plus you can't choose to do all the review questions for one topic, or redo the 1s and 2s after a quiz.

They have also been horrible about any sort of e-mail correspondence or answering questions. Annoying to be stuck on a system like GT, but without e-mail correspondence ... I'm not sure why we should have to confidence to transfer over to FC.

GT isn't down for me, but it's crazy slow and makes me wonder whether they are migrating(?). I guess I'm going to have to check the firecracker account they made for me several times a day to make sure I know when the migration happens so that I don't bank a bunch of stuff in GT that misses the migration and I'd have to remember to go back and flag a second time.

I agree, I think they need to bring back the percent completed in each section.

I actually like the new color scheme in FC. I find it easier to read and more like the color of a book's pages. I especially like that the when doing review questions, the answers are highlighted in green instead of that obnoxious bright red from GT.

Yes, I agree here. I liked that in GT you could just click anywhere on that section of the card and it would expand.

They should definitely separate clerkship percent completed from the basic sciences/organ systems percent completed.

I had asked them when exactly the stuff was going to be transferred a few days ago, got a reply.

We are transferring accounts in batches (we did the first transfer earlier today) and hope to be done with all transfers by early next week (week of Jan 21st).

Before we transfer your account, we will email you in the morning to alert you. We anticipate that the transfer process will last a few hours. When we start the transfer, we will post an alert on your GT account so you know that, if you are using GT that day, any new data created on GT after that time will not be transferred to Firecracker. We will also be putting your Firecracker account on hold until the transfer is complete. Once the transfer is complete, we will email you so you can get back to studying!

So much for waiting til all of the GT features were on FC. Is it really that hard to put gamification and setting personalized review schedules for an individual question as you see fit in? Or to say "See all questions rated a 1 tomorrow, but go ahead and automatically space out the rest with your formula"?

I really need that customize review date feature.

I noticed 60 days is often too much and 30 days it too soon for my memory and I like to customize somewhere around 40-45 to help space my q's out a bit more, but at the same time not go 60 days.

I also use it quite often for freshly banked q's to adjust daily load or to see something sooner.

yes ... waiting on this more than other features - others are aesthetic kind of things, but this really changes my study schedule ... i want to know if it's even in their plans, as i for some reason have a bad feeling that spaced repetition is their 'new and improved' method of doing this ... which is totally not what i'm looking for

for those that didn't choose to transfer right away:
"For those of you who do not want to transfer your data now, we will give you the option of transferring your data prior to shutting down GT. We don’t have an exact date yet, but we’ll notify you at least 2 weeks before we close down GT for good."

Anyone else have a problem with quiz questions not being submitted? I'll always have a handful of questions that I'll mark 1-5 then submit but it still keeps saying I have those cards due even though I just did them.

Tried different browsers (Chrome and Safari) but the problem still persists.

I've had that problem recently too. For example I'll answer 50 q's but when I end the quiz there are still 2-3 q's left- which I already answered!

Why do the listed topics in each subject have to be in alphabetical order (firecracker).. Doesn't it seem more logical to list them in in chronological order. Seeing "key genetic terms" in the middle of the genetics list, where in GT it appears first, is at the least, inconvenient.

Also random thought: should we start a firecracker thread haha

I get this card wrong all the time and it irritates me...

One card asks for a family of viruses, Enteroviruses are #1 causes of aseptic meningitis
Another card asks for Mumps, coxsackie, echovirus as "most common"

🙁 well which one is it.

There already is an option to look at the next/previous question. If you don't like the ranking you gave, just click previous and you can re-rank it to what you want. (I believe the hotkeys are just p/n)

Well, according to the enteroviruses card, echovirus and coxsackie a/b are enteroviruses.
