Hey guys whats up. I'm a long time lurker but you all have been such a great resource, so I wanted to throw something out.

After tons of research concerning SMP/Post bacc I want to know what I can do to improve my chances for acceptance. Let it be known that dentistry is what I want(what I really, really, want) and that I'm going after it like a BOSS.

That being said:

My cGPA is 3.09
My sGPA is 2.83

I am HARD at work studying for my DAT at the beginning of August(I'm using all of the usual study resources). I have also been accepted to an SMP that begins this FALL 2011 (USF). I know that its a challenge for people with better stats than I to matriculate, and I'm not afraid of re-applying until I get in. I just want to be busy doing the right stuff.

P.S.
And I know that you may not be able to tell me my chances without a solid DAT score, but feel free to add what you think I should get on it, I'm looking for real advice, I just need your help SND.

Thanks

Study for the DAT like your life depended on it, deff go to the SMP and apply next year( i would say only apply this year if you can get a 21AA or above to offset your poor gpa, and even in this case it will be an uphill battle) when you can get ur sgpa up to atleast a 3.0.

Will my SMP GPA be counted into my sGPA at all? Or should I expect to take post-bacc courses once I've completed my SMP in order to increase the sGPA? BTW bing12 congrats on your acceptance.

thank you. well regardless if it counts towards your overall or not, if you decide to do the SMP, and you MUST do great, it will give the ADCOMS something positive to look at. Whether you decide to do an SMP or postbacc is up to you. What was your major, what are the additional science classes you have taken excluding the normal pre-reqs?

I was Biomedical Sciences. I've taken all of the pre reqs as well as upper levels like Cell Bio, Micro Bio, Bio Physics, etc.

I'm definitely doing this SMP and I'm definitely going to rock it, I just know that some applications do not even get face time because their sGPA's don't pass the cut off. Its 3.25 minimum at some schools and if I DO finish this SMP strong, will my sGPA STILL be a 2.83 and be automatically counted out?

The GPA calculation will look at both undergraduate and SMP GPA separately. But they also average them out.

Cumulative = undergrad GPA + grad GPA

How much it will improve depends on the credits you have already taken as undergrad and the credits you will take in SMP.

I have heard from so many people that if you do really well in SMP (~3.8), dental school will look at that preferentially and see that you have improved dramatically. In the end, if you can pull of >21 on DAT and ~3.8GPA in SMP, I am sure you have a good chance of having interview which can lead to acceptance.

Good luck.

Retake any pre-req you got less than a C in, get at least a 3.8 in the masters and a 21 on the DAT and you have a good shot.
