Guys going into OB/GYN?

So what would you really think if some guy in your class told you he wanted to go into OB/GYN... and be honest! I'm wondering if I'll get a different answer from this forum than I would from the OB/GYN forum.

I wouldn't think about anything. If he loves it, then so be it. I personally can't see myself in this field, but I know a few guys interested in it.

of course, but i figure only OB/GYN people are writing in that one. i was hoping to get an honest sampling of non-OB/GYN people. im wondering, if i start telling my classmates about my plans, what are they thinking when they get that incredulous look on their face and say, "REALLY?? why do you want to do that?"

There's 3 guys in my class going into OB as well as 2 girls and I personally can't figure out why any of them want to do it. I hated it so much it's hard to comprehend anyone liking it male or female. But I do think it's strange for a guy to want to do OB and don't know if I could date a guy doing that.

Doing OB/GYN rotation now, so I have some insight. Yeah, you'll probably get that reaction from some people, mostly those (both male and female) who have no desire to do OB/GYN.

Allow me to share something my rotation director told me: people in OB/GYN actually WANT a decent mix of males and females in the profession. They don't necessarily see the recent female shift of people coming into the field as good. They actually WANT more male OB/GYN's. So if you find you really enjoy taking care of women, go for it. Those who might think you want to do it for some other reason are probably just immature with dirty minds.

I think it's great, but then again, I'm a female interested in OBGYN. Men have been too scared away from this field.

I'm interested in OB/Gyn and possibly infertility. I've heard the women in that field can be quite brutal ("eat there own"), so I will wait until after my 3rd yr rotations to make up my mind.

And they are trying to get more men back into the field......

Well, it seems a little odd to me. Don't most women prefer female docs when they're getting their tune-ups? Most of my she-friends tell me that they feel a little uncomfortable being seen by a male doc; consequently they all have female docs. I dunno why a guy would wanna be put into a position where many of his patients would rather see someone else.

I want a good OB/GYN, whatever gender. There are many other women like me out there. I've had female OB/GYNs, but currently I go to a male. One of the women I went to was a rotten physician, the next woman was excellent, but had to leave her practice due to personal reasons.

Most times, though, if they would rather see someone else they will. I think if you want to do OB/GYN, it's fine. Docs see all sorts of things that wouldn't be normal in another context, this isn't that weird relatively.

Bully for anyone who wants to go into OBGYN, with all the stuff surrounding it these days.

To echo DrMom, I've had both men and women too, and it's never been an issue.

My wife has indicated the same thing. Men seem to be more concerned with not hurting a woman. Maybe it is because we have no reference frame for the anatomy and associated pains.

Or, maybe those guy obgyn's just really like their job. 😉

I cant stand OB. But my father actually switched from FP to OB/GYN at age 45!

His interest is entirely GYN surgery. He could care less about the OB - too much risk, crazy hours.

The point is, he has taylored his practice almost entirely towards GYN surgery. He does very few deliveries anymore. He loves it.

Most of the men that I know that want to go into OB-GYN are single. (But it is just a job right?)

THe Bergan Record did an article a while back and their conclusion was..

women from religious or patriarchal upbringings prefer men. They feel that women aren't as good (huh?).

Single, successful women prefer women gynos. Feminists also.

I'm a male....married...and worked in L&D before med school.....

I came to med school thinking I wanted to go into OB or surgery. Everyone in my class knows this and the only people that find that strange are the ones that don't like the specialty and don't know why anyone would want to go into it. I'm also the president of the ob/gyn club.

So far in my second year.....I still see myself going into ob/gyn.
