Guys: Were you accepted after not wearing a suit to your interview?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Why wouldn't you wear a suit to your interview? Hmmm, strange....😀

I thought everyone does. However while interviewing at a D.O. School this round I saw a guy wearing a blue shirt and tie with khaki's. I felt sorry for him, and I know he felt out of place.

you should always wear a suit to an interview.

yeah there was someone like that when I went to my interview, but the airline had lost his luggage so he had to think of something quick. So that is understandable.

I wore a (Van Heusen [sp?]) blue pin-striped button-down long-sleeved shirt, a silver and blue tie, slacks, and that was it. No jacket for me, and I got into TCOM. EVERYone else wore the standard suit, and they probably thought I felt a little out of place. But, I was the one out of the group that stood out, and I had a few comments from the admissions office on how they liked my shirt. As long as it's tastefully done, I don't feel there's anything wrong with distinguishing yourself from all the other applicants.

yeah thats true, it should be formal. A dress shirt and tie with no jacket is fine. no jeans or tshirts obviously. 😛

Personally, I think you should put in the money if you dont have a suit. Its well worth it and why would you risk it? It shows professionalism and a degree of confidence. While there probably are people out there who have gotten in by just wearing a nice shirt and slacks, just pony up and but a decent suit from S&K. Your gonna like the way you look.

I would say it's a sign of disrespect for the school if you don't wear a suit to interview. This is a massively important part of the process... part of it is being professional, part of it is being humble yet confident, part of it is tradition... It all comes down to the fact that you're going to have to go and present yourself to someone that is about to make one of the biggest decisions regarding your life. So don't underdress and don't stick out. You want to be remembered for what you said, not what you wore.

I agree 100%. Part of the interview is how you comport yourself to the people who are interviewing you and the image of self-confidence that you have in yourself. It shows that you are ready to become a professional instead of remaining a college-student were anything goes anyday (for the most part).

Details please if you pulled this off.

I did not wear a suit to an interview. I just wore a navy blue sweater instead and light blue shirt and matching tie. And here's what I was told at an interview " looks like you are all set for a med school". Who ever says only a suit can project confidence and professionalism, should reconsider their opinion.

As long as you look professional and carry yourself well, there is no problem with the interview. I don't have a suit and never have had one because I am on the borderline of being poor, so I wore a shirt, tie, and slacks to the interview. I had 3 interviews and I got into all 3 schools. Just present yourself well, and answer their questions in a comfortable confident manner.

This is the most important part of the whole interview process in addition to the Q & A portion although that goes hand and hand.

Congrats. I never have wore a suit before and I just feel that suit's not my thing. I feel i am carrying too much burden. Anyways, the point is that there are alternatives.

Was that at Bradenton? I was there sitting right next to him. Poor guy....

No that was at NSUCOM, but I guess that happens more often which really sucks.

Yeah, he had to go Walmart and get some clothes....hehe....

I know a number of interviewers who will flat out reject a candidate unless they have a reason for not wearing a suit such as airline luggage problems (orthodoc this year).

There is absolutely no reason for a pre-med student to not wear business formal attire (at least dress slacks & blazer). Your medical school interview is potentially the most important day of your life & you are going to do something that may jeopardize your future b/c you are lazy??

As was evident in this thread...Sure people have gotten in w/out wearing the proper attire. People have also been accepted w/ ridiculously low MCAT scores, but I wouldn't suggest you go out there & apply w/ a 17 either. Don't jeopardize your future. If you want to be a physician you will have to get used to 'stuffy suits w/ shirts & ties' anyway.

Like Krazykritter stated, I didn't wear my suit to my first interview this year b/c the airline had re-routed me 3x on my way there, but my luggage did not join me until the interview was over and I was checking in at the airport for my return flight home. But I also wouldn't use that as an excuse to show up in my "Life is Good" t-shirt either. Took a taxi to an all night Walmart and grabbed what looked like a reasonable top & slacks (the changing rooms were closed at midnight, so I was also guessing whether they'd fit or not, too - since I'm not a guy... ) and prayed that my interviewers would understand, which I think they did, since I was accepted!! I felt totally weird and out of place being there without a suit on amongst my fellow interviewees and I don't recommend it at all. I also don't recommend checking your luggage for interview trips, either.

wow that must be nerveracking. but congrats on the acceptance!

I wore a tan 3-piece suit with light pink or green shirts. I wanted to express myself while dressing formally and I did not want to show up in the regulation funereal black that everyone else wears. Actually black is my favorite suit color but it does lead to the march of the penguins effect.

March of the Penguins - I love it! Yes. It is great you went with tan. It amazes me that more people don't go with tan, or lighter grey.

It was really nervewracking & I got very little sleep. Definitely did not feel capable of bringing my "A game" to that interview but I did the best I could and everyone was so kind - it was really great in the end. Still - I don't recommend trying it!! 😀

I think you were in my inteview group (Oct 5th)...were you the nice lady that came in with a pink top?...I think initially everyone looked shocked that somebody did not wear a suit/something dark but when we went around and you told us that the airline had lost you luggage we all felt really bad...anyway congrats on the acceptance...if you were the lady I am thinking of are you going to DMU?

That's me - yup! Haven't decided yet between UMDNJ or DMU, and still have a few others to hear from. I loved DMU, the students, staff, faculty, and fellow interviewees, in spite of the crazy experience getting there and feeling totally out of place b/c of the missing suit!! (Even though you were all so nice, it's hard not to feel completely strange in that situation!) Maybe we'll be classmates in August! :luck:

lol...i had an inkling that it was you (wal-mart...etc) ...I felt the same as you with DMU...for me its down to DMU and Loyola (still waiting to hear)....i withdrew from all of my other osteopathic (CCOM, PCOM...etc) and allopathic schools...I am just curious about loyola and I really love how close it is to my family and friends...but I really believe that I will be going to DMU. It great to know that you have done well after our DMU interviews...seems like that was such a long time ago...good luck on everything else👍

I wore dress slacks, shirt and tie. I also did not shave my beard, trimmed, but not shaved. I was accepted, and was told that I looked the part of a country doc, which the interviewers knew was my goal.

...so I was also guessing whether they'd fit or not, too - since I'm not a guy... ):

Awww, Ortho is a girl! It's so hard to figure out gender from a message board, unless the name is obvious! How's the decision making coming along?

 I know what you mean, though. I think many people on SDN get surprised when they find out about people's true identities...!!
But okay so - is there an implication in there that I'm having a tough time deciding which school to choose b/c I'm a girl?!! 😉 Just kiddin'. Sort of...!
I sadly gave both a deposit for now. Just buying more time. Now I can't make fun of HOD since I landed up doing the same thing he did!!

Now I finally feel comfortable disclosing my transgender status!😛 Like Buffalo Bill in Silence of the lambs!

Preciousss!

Oh, hell no!! Sorry if it read like that!!! I would never make a disrespectul statement like that. Anyway, I think women have much better heads on their shoulders than men, hands down!

LOL!! You are crazy, man!! Uh - can I say that? You are crazy, person!! LOL!!

You didn't - I was just givin' you a hard time!! 😛
No worries!! I love your sense of humor - you'd be a great classmate, I'm sure!

But does yours bite - like mine does?? 😛

LOL! I'm glad I'm not your mailman!

I actually put this same picture at the end of a cell biology presentation on some stupid project we did on DNA fingerprinting/gel electrophoresis to "catch a criminal"-no one laughed at all!! It was quite embarrassingly uncomfortable. Perhaps clothes would have helped.

Perhaps!!
Still - rest assured that if I had been there, I probably would have laughed. It's easy to get me to laugh - I find humor in so many things!! Might be a bad trait for a physician.....
By the way, doggie only bites people he KNOWS!
First, he pretends to really want a tummy-rub or something mushy & sweet, thus luring you into his trap...Then, without warning, he is grabbing onto a few fingers like a police dog hunting down a criminal - and he won't let go!! (It REALLY hurts when he gets you in the face...!)
