GW Hold

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
ok. so i called. they said i should be expecting some "new information" shortly via snail mail. and i think i know what it is 😱:cry::cry:
i really liked that school. oh well....
it is my loss, but theirs too... i would be a great fit 🙁
am i allowed to be bitter for a few days? 😕

I just called also, and they told me I am still on hold and will be rereviewed later, but they did not know when. I hate waiting.

Did they care when you called? I feel like calling some schools and seeing what's up but i am scared.

I know. I've been complete at GW since Sept. but heard nothing. A ton of people complete after me have heard (for interviews, rejections, and holds) so I don't know what the hold-up is.

I'm with you....I've been complete there for over three months and haven't heard a word....not sure if I should call or not....😕

so GW put me on hold 9/28, and I just received an interview invitation this morning. i'm going to decline it, but it looks like GW's hold is not a pre-rejection. good luck everyone :luck:

edit: also, the interview day they gave me was January 10th, which is pretty decent for this far into the interview season.

Thanks for letting us know. I got put on hold on the same day as you. Did you send them anything since getting placed on hold, like a letter of interest?

hey everyone,

this is probably a really dumb question but if you GW puts you on hold, do they e-mail you? Or is there a website you can go to find out whether or not you are on hold?

No, I didn't send them a letter of interest or any updates.

Thanks for the info!

I also got holded on the same date as you did... hopefully your withdrawal can increase my odds :luck:

Yeah, the letter goes something like this:

Dear sawood,

Thank you for your interest in our school. Even though you don't totally suck, there is nothing interesting or remarkable about you either, so we are putting you on hold. We'll be in touch, but not for a really long time. Merry Christmas,

GW

Seriously, though, they send you an email.

I'm with you....I've been complete there for over three months and haven't heard a word....not sure if I should call or not....😕

You should call... it could be something that you need to take care of, like a missing LOR.

Yaaay i'm on hold today too. 🙁

Now i need a new excuse to road trip up that way 🙂

Do they put like 75% of applicants on hold? There have been VERY few rejections posted.

Yup, me too. GW is in my top 3 and I am trying to decide whether to send a Letter of Interest. For anyone who hasn't received a HOLD yet and is curious how the email reads:

Dear Applicant,

Thank you for your sincere interest in The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. You may be aware that the applicant pool has increased significantly. Please be assured that we continue to read every completed file in detail. This letter is an attempt to help you better understand your status.

At this time, your application file is complete, has been reviewed and is currently on hold. Your desire to become a physician, your understanding of the challenges, and your perseverance is commendable. Please understand it will be some time before you hear from us again and accept our sincere apologies for the unpleasant wait. Should the committee offer you an interview, you will be contacted immediately via email. We truly appreciate your patience.

As the AMCAS application, secondary application, and letters of recommendation are quite detailed, we do not require any further information or documentation from you at this time.

We fully understand that the application process is daunting. We hope that this update on your current status is helpful to you.

Sincerely,

Diane P. McQuail

Sweet, huh? It sort of sounds like they are discouraging people from sending letters/updates. What do people think? LOI or no LOI?

Also, they limited applicants to 5 LORs with the secondary. Would it be a bad idea to send another LOR or 2 now?

Just trying to figure out what I should do, if anything at all. Thanks guys, and good luck with the rest of your schools!! 🙂

i was also put on hold at GW today! So that means, only one interview invite (FSU), one hold, and no responses yet from the 5 other schools I filled out secondaries for!

Thanks for declining it...and if someone on this thread gets off the list..please let us know

Good luck everyone,

I preferred the silence, I think... better than the infamous hold.

Got the HOLD yesterday. 👎 Complete 11/19.

What does everyone think about LOI's?? The hold email specifically discourages updates.

Please, if you are taken off hold- post!
Include anything you did after the hold email

THANKS!!😀

When were ya'll complete? I have not heard a word from them since I got my complete email.....😎

gwu was my top choice but as of today i'm gonna be a reapplicant to all schools...have a 3.75 gpa, 4 yrs of research, 3 months of shadowing, 4 yrs of volunteer work, applied early...and then bam...26 MCAT...its amazing how one exam can discredit four years of work...any other reapplicants out there? are you as excited as i am?! :-D

Hey, for some strange reason (I think someone is playing a joke on me) I have an interview at GW with a 25Q. I just received note of it earlier this week. So don't lose hope. Unless they are, actually, trying to play a joke on me bc they think it is funny. But really, do they have time for that kind of thing with so many applicants?

Congrats on the interview invite! I am still waiting to get off this hold
What are your other numbers and ECs?
Also, if you dont mind me asking, are you a URM?
I just want to get a better picture of what theyre looking for now. they jus seem very unpredictable.

I am actually not an URM, I am caucasion. I honestly put my applications in before I received my mcat score, so I was expecting 0 invites and to reapply next year (which will be more than likely what will happen anyway). So, I graduated from Emory as a political science major with a 3.6. (It was much higher, but my very last semester I wrote a research paper that was not supposed to be a research paper and received my 1st D). My science gpa is a 3.3, but again, I was planning on taking 2 easier science courses next semester before I reapply to get it up to at least a 3.4. My extra curriculars are pretty good though.

Research for a summer in a cancer lab
a year and a half of Neurology research
A summer of obesity research at columbia
Now, a full-time research assistant in NYC (Sloan-Kettering).

Certified 1st responder
Physician shadowing
Observorship (go into surgeries)

About 4 years hospital volunteering
Volunteer at the organization for sick abandoned babies
Some political stuff and more volunteer stuff.

Maybe they liked my politics in medicine essay? Honestly, I have no idea. I still think its a joke.

Your situation is almost same as me ( 3.8 GPA, over 3000 hrs of direct pt care, shadowed, loads of ECs in different fields, research in medicine 4 yrs now, international volunteering, semesters abroad...etc etc), even being published in a major med paper..and surprise surprise--- 24 R on the MCAT. Hope you get it in this cycle though..as for me i got plenty of rejections and three holds....

i feel your pain. im on the exec board for three clubs at school and did one year volunteering internationally also (or one summer actually) and we are on the road to publishing our first paper...i updated all teh schools and thus far...a HELL of a lot of rejections (including gw because they told me i shud be expecting a letter thru the mail soon)...and two holds...i hope you get in this cycle too..God knows we are capable to be damn good physicians...let's hope some adm committe can realize that too..i just hope our four years of effort dont go to waste. congrats to all those who have gotten interviews, you have all earned it..pray for me!!

So I was put on hold about a month ago. I wrote a letter of interest the other early last week thinking this might help things. I call to check my status today, and the woman tells me that snail mail correspondence was sent out yesterday! So does this mean I'm rejected? 😕 Could they possibly be doing interview invites through snail mail now? I'm thinking not, but I'm trying to stay in denial as long as possible. Moral of the story: hold is better than rejection.

snail mail might be just a copy of the hold or re-worded hold letter. Doesn't necessarily have to be a rejection.

the lady said "new info"

has anyone received that dreaded snail? i haven't yet, but unfortunately it is prolly a rejection😱 oh well, at least it will be a closure🙁

I was put on hold on 12/5 as well. I was complete on 10/15.

Here's to hoping, praying, and some more hoping.

I was placed on hold on 9/28 and received the invite today for an interview in mid January. I did not do anything after getting placed on hold because like everyone else, I assumed that the hold will only lead to a rejection. I'm so very happy to be proven wrong. For those who are still on hold, don't lose hope. They are still sending invites and you can still get off hold. Good luck everyone!!! :luck::luck::luck:

Just received the snail mail rejection.

Hope everyone else fares better!

Would you mind sharing stats please? And congratulations on the invite!!!!!

I think it's definitely true that they reject people whose stats are too "high" for them. They know that they are a safety school for us and thus don't want to waste their time on us because they know we'll get in AND go somewhere better

👎 GW 😡

i dont think that is true. no medical school really is a "safety school". this isn't college where everyone ends up getting in somewhere.

why would a school want to accept students they feel are less qualified? maybe GW goes for applicants who are more than just numbers. if you applied to it as a safety school, then why dont you just withdraw so that people like me who would really like to go there can have a better chance.

but if what you say is true, then where's my interview/acceptance GW?!! 😕

Rejected! I was on hold since September and finally got the snail mail yesterday.

that is a really annoying post and shows how little you understand about this process.

keep tellin' yourself you are "too good" for some med schools. absurd. get over yourself.

just a glance shows that the people GW has accepted have qualities you only possess in your self-absorbed head.

congrats to them!!!!!

Thank you MDRus... and the rest of you... you don't have to be rude about it. Maybe my MCAT score isn't the highest, but did you ever think I have circumstances that made it that way? You probably didn't think about that cause I am not whining about them. And how can GW be a safety school when they get 13,000+ applications? Maybe you can explain that to me.

Oh and if you bothered to check, I have interviews elsewhere where people with much higher MCATs got rejected... is University of Rochester a safety too? Honestly, I know you're tryin to make yourself feel better, but does putting other people down in the process really help you sleep at night?
