GW Hold

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
And how can GW be a safety school when they get 13,000+ applications? Maybe you can explain that to me.

It's a safety school because 10,000 or so applicants were told by their friends in medical school and their Pre-med advisors to "apply broadly." So they went flipping through their MSAR looking for out of state schools that didn't have an in-state bias and had comparable average GPA and MCAT scores for their acceptances. GWU fit the bill perfectly, so click click, and we're one more closer to the mandate to "apply broadly."

Now obviously that's not the case for everyone who applied there, but for the grand majority, i think so. 🙄

Maybe we have a different definition of safety... to me, safety is somewhere where you think you have an awesome shot of getting in. With 13,000 apps, I find it hard for anyone to think that.

I don't quite understand your logic here. A safety school implies that it is easy to get into. GW probably gets more applications than anywhere else, and therefore utimately sends rejections more than anyone else. How is that a safety?

Maybe you meant it is a common pre-med misconception to believe GW is a safety school. Hence the high volume of applications (also coupled with the fact that their secondary is pretty easy to complete), and hence the high volume of applicants who are schocked when they get a rejection.

I never understood why pre-meds even use the word safety when talking about medical schools. There is no easy medical school in the US to get into. Granted, the caliber of the schools will vary (although even this is debated often on SDN), but there are simply too many applying. Pre-meds who use that term feel that their numbers will put them through, but they are shocked when these types of schools (like GW) reject them.

👍 That's all I'm sayin.

that is a really annoying post and shows how little you understand about this process.

keep tellin' yourself you are "too good" for some med schools. absurd. get over yourself.

just a glance shows that the people GW has accepted have qualities you only possess in your self-absorbed head.

congrats to them!!!!!

D'accord!

Yeah that's what i meant. 🙂 i don't remember MSAR publishing the # of applicants for a school (maybe i missed it). There's a large potential for people to come across GWU's acceptance stats and think "Hey maybe I've got a shot here."

Thank you MDRus... and the rest of you... you don't have to be rude about it. Maybe my MCAT score isn't the highest, but did you ever think I have circumstances that made it that way? You probably didn't think about that cause I am not whining about them. And how can GW be a safety school when they get 13,000+ applications? Maybe you can explain that to me.

Oh and if you bothered to check, I have interviews elsewhere where people with much higher MCATs got rejected... is University of Rochester a safety too? Honestly, I know you're tryin to make yourself feel better, but does putting other people down in the process really help you sleep at night?

that's precisely why they are a safety school for most people, why does harvard receive only 5000 applications?

Anyway, I don't want to offend anyone on here, congrats to everyone accepted. . .

it's just to say that the concept of a "safety school" doesn't exist is absurd. . . . Is every single 20 or 30 schools that everyone on here applies to is their top choice???? Come one, there are tiers of school for each applicant, some are more desirable than others, and that doesn't necessarily have to do with US News ranking, geography, $$, family play a big role

I just think that there is nothing wrong with calling your lower tier schools your "safety schools". I am sure if you really want to be a doctor and end up going to a "safety school", you could still become an outstanding physician and make an impact. . .

would anyone be offended if i called this kid ignorant?
i hope you dont get into your "safety" school and someone with lower numbers than you takes your spot and craps on it.
i would say more, but i think u get banned for some things...

Uhhhhh.......The reason why people apply to 20 schools is because safeties don't exist. If they did, you could theoretically only apply to your top choice and then a "safety" and be fine. But people have to apply broadly because this process is far less predictable than you are imagining.

Come one, there are tiers of school for each applicant, some are more desirable than others, and that doesn't necessarily have to do with US News ranking, geography, $$, family play a big role.

I agree with you here, but anyone familiar with this process will be quick to tell you that even if you do line up with a school well, and it seems as though you would be a slam dunk at it, there is still the very real possibility that you can be rejected. Many people are accepted to their first choice, which is theoretically or statistically harder to get into, but are rejected at schools which are easier to get into and were more of a fit for the candidate. And this happens all the time. So explain how those are safety schools then?

You can say you have a better chance statistically to get in. But you cannot use the term safety because there is no such thing as a guarantee for admission in medical school. This is not college admissions, medical school is a completely different ball game.

I just called the Admissions Office....HOLD! Oh well, at least finals are over.

I was put on hold Sept 28th, got rejection letter Dec 5th if that helps anyone.

Damn I want to go to this stupid school...

I'm not on hold...hopefully a good sign?

Hey Everyone I just got an interview invite after being on hold since sept 28. I initially thought hold was a rejection so keep optimistic 🙂

im glad to see that others are getting interviews off the hold list.

now just waiting 6-8 weeks for a letter through snail mail....(sigh)...

If you were actually rejected they would have sent you a rejection letter. I have never understood the logic in regarding holds as rejections. It is so annoying to read "oh, I got a hold, so its pretty much a rejection." There are no ambiguities about rejections.

Here is to all of us on the waitlist. Good luck!

On hold 12/5

Complete 11/19

Off hold- interview invite 12/28

I did not send any updates

Wow, even more popular than last year. I too got the hold message just now. Does anyone know if they have actually straight-up rejected anyone as of right now? I am not sure that they have...and if so does everyone "get placed on hold " at least during this part of the season? Has anyone who previously applied there succesfully been removed off off the hold list for an interview? A lot of people are asking this but nobody seems to know....

I for one am planning to send an update letter because it has been 4 months since my AMCAS submission and I have some publications etc that have gone through in that time.

I was put on hold in beg. of Nov and then rejected via snail mail a month later.

Argh - I got the 'hold' today via email. DAMNIT.

Of all the many that just randomly click to apply to GWU, I'm one of the few that actually likes the school and wants to go there for specific reasons. It sucks being a pool of 13,000....the sincerity is just diluted.

once again..DAMNIT.

Since you have a reason that you can probably back up/demonstrate (I'm guessing perhaps global health), I think that writing them a letter of interest or intent here would definitely help. That also might make your application stand out a little bit from the thousands that don't write that letter.... :luck:

I just turned down my interview invitation to GWU, so maybe you can have my spot. Don't loose hope! Best of luck.

I am STILL on hold.
Anyone hear any news? bad or good? 🙁

im still on hold also---i was wondering if anyone actually did send an update while on hold--and whether that helped out with an interview invite?? i know this has been discussed but i didnt see any update from anyone who ended up deciding to send an update...

thanks and goodluck people!!! being in limbo feels like 😵!!!!

Hi all,

I just recieved word this afternoon that I have been invited for an interview in the middle of February.

I was complete on August 8th, 2007 and put on hold on September 2th, 2007.

So a hold does not equal an interview.

That is all.

Yes, I was notified by e-mail.

I was actually complete on 8.27 and put on hold on 9.28 also! Damn, I'm going to keep my fingers crossed, but time is running out...

hi
i rec'd an email today as well w/ an interview invite for mid-late Feb. I will most likely be declining the offer because I've been fortunate to receive an acceptance from an IS school.

best of luck to all of you!!

Thanks man.

Nah, you're okay, you've gotten into Stony Brook. This may be the only shot I have. Gotta take advantage.

Yay! i got an email last night. I'm OFF hold!
i got an interview for late Feb too! sweet... 😀
maybe i'll see some of you there?

I managed to move mine up to the first week of February. I have midterms the week they scheduled me so it worked out. 🙂. Good luck everyone and maybe I"ll see you there.

goodluck for everybody's upcoming interviews! seems like 2008 was the push they needed to start processing applications belonging to good applicants 🙂

I only heard I was on hold after calling the admissions office.
Should I have heard from them via e-mail?
I am worried that I am not getting e-mails from schools😕

briefly looking at previous application cycles, it seems that ppl who got interviews in february got waitlisted.

The woman at the admissions said there still are open spots and they do not interview for waitlist.

Does anyone know anyone who perhaps got a straight up acceptance from GW after a late interview? I just need some hope...😕

i just got off the hold today! i was complete back in august, there is hope. do you guys know what fraction of interviewees get accepted at GW, especially when they interview late Feb? Thanks

rahooligan - were you notified via email or regular mail?
