I just received an email this morning saying I'm invited to a George Washington University Interview in December.

It states that the interview is not required but "highly encouraged". I live in California and currently have a full-time work schedule, so it is difficult to make arrangements to go. With that said, does anyone know how influential this interview is to the university?

I do better face to face than over the phone, so despite cost, I am willing to fly over for a day if it'll benefit me.

Any advice? Tips? Warnings?

Thanks in advance 😉

If you are serious about going to GWU then showing up to the interview says alot. I dont know any better than you but would think that passing up an opportunity to interview in person is a sign that you are not serious about them. 1st because if you are coming out of state then how likely would it be for you to move to DC? 2nd maybe it makes them appear like a back up school? I think having the opportunity to show your personality in person and be judged by character rather than for what is on paper should be taken. Remember there are many others who are coming from out of state to go to that interview as well. Hope this helps!

OK, so I got this too about a week ago and was super confused as to what they meant.

Basically, they really want you to interview in person. If you dont, you have to over the phone. They said the "interview" is really mostly about figuring out if you're a fit for them and they're a fit for you. It seems incredibly low key. The rest of the day is set to meet other prospectives, faculty, students, etc.

If it's a school you're highly considering I would do it. I couldn't attend the december date but they were quick to reschedule me for January. I actually asked to do the phone interview and they were really willing to keep scheduling me on different days so that I could come.

Thanks to both of you for your replies. Alemarti, I totally agree with what you're saying about showing intent through a physical presence. It's really got me considering to go now - after all, it is a school that is on the upper end of my list. I feel that actually visiting the school and meeting with faculty may help to make or break the deal for me.

Almcam1921 - I woke up to this email before going to work this morning, so I was very confused as well! Do you think they invite a majority of the applicants to interview or do you think that those who have been given an invitation are part of a "close to final pool"? In other words, does this mean that the rest of our application meets what they're looking for, but want to put a face to the application in order to see a "person" rather than a set of scores and words?

If they let me reschedule to a later date, that definitely helps. My only concern is, the longer I wait, the less spots remain right? It is rolling admissions after all O_O

This "waiting game" with the intermittent interview opportunities is so exciting and nerve-racking at the same time! 😛

Yeha I'm really unsure about the whole thing. From when I talked to them, it didn't seem like some people were being asked for in person interviews and some people were being asked for phone interviews. I think they actually might kind of require the in person interview, and then if for some reason there's like super extenuating circumstances, you can do it over the phone.

The january date is early--saturday the 7th. I think the only day before that one is the december one, so i doubt they'll take their entire class off that one. Also, looking at the internet, their matriculation rate is low, so this is one of those schools where waitlisted probably means you're actually in. GWU isn't my top choice, so I didn't care as much about the later interview date, but I would definitely suggest calling them to ask this question! Good luck!

I just got the invitation email, and I'm unsure about it too. Do they invite everyone to the interview / open house? 😕

Anyone else get the interview to GWU? I will be there on 1/7

I'll be at the interview this weekend (12/10).

PTAttention:

I just received an invitation for 1/7. I'll see you then. Perhaps we can grab a drink after the interview. They just opened a new Whole Foods at Foggy Bottom. What a bonus!

Kevin

DId anyone else attend on 12/10? If so, what did you think?

Just got an email saying I was accepted! Has anyone else heard back yet?

Congratulations!! Wow that was fast! Where are you going to go? How was the interview anyway?

Thanks! I thought it was really quick too, especially considering that they said we wouldn't hear back until mid January. I haven't decided yet where I will go. GW would definitely be the most convenient. The interview was pretty laid back. There was a group interview, group activity, tour and individual interview. The individual interview was more of a discussion about your application and whether your file is missing anything and then she asked how I liked GW and if I had any questions.

I literally submitted my application the day before the deadline (12/14). Do you think there will be any more interview invitations?

not sure gpb. I'd recommend calling the school directly, as they'll give you a more concrete answer. Best of luck!

Has anyone heard anything from GWU since your interview on 1/7??

GWU is hosting another round of interviews on January 21st, so I wouldn't expect anything before then. They'll probably respond by the beginning of February.

Kevin

I submitted my app pretty close to the deadline too, and was invited for an interview on Feb 4. 🙂

I had an interview on 1/7 and was sent an acceptance e-mail 2 days later.

Any tips for the interview here? I have one on Feb 4 and am pretty excited. How did you guys like the school and faculty?

Sent from my SAMSUNG Galaxy S2 using SDN Mobile

So correct me if I'm wrong but it sounds like if they invite you to the interview you are likely to get an offer shortly after your interview?

It begins with an introduction by the department head. Then you and three other candidates have a group interview. The professors all ask different questions, but they will ask questions about how to deal with difficult patients, what you've learned in your volunteer experience, the hardest part of PT, etc. It was relaxed. You have time to think about your answer as others are talking. If you have an immediate answer, then go first. That looks proactive.

After that, you do a group project (what five things would you bring to an island if you were stranded for a long time)? Then current studnets take you on a tour, then you have an individual interview with a professor. You'll have a marvelous time.

Kevin

Fallingreason-During my group interview, he went around and asked us to introduce ourselves and tell an interesting facr about ourselves. Then he asked about our role models and showed us a picture and we had to describe what we thought was going on. My group got no actual quetions about PT or our experiences. My individual interview wasn't much of an interview. She looked at my file and noted that it was complete, asked what I thought of GW so far, and asked if I had any questions. I thought everyone was really nice and it was really laid back.

BuckeyePat- My interview was 12/10 and we were told in the interview that we shouldn't expect to hear anything until mid-January. I got my acceptance a couple days later.

Anyone going to GW? I just got my acceptance today!

Similar to others, I received an acceptance phone call 2 days after my interview on 1/7. I am currently planning on attending GWU!

I was also accepted this morning, though I will be declining their offer.

I think my decision will be between Columbia and GWU =/

I wasn't expecting this decision to be that hard but I liked GW so much...

Thanks toes crossed! I really liked GWU they have a great program and the students seemed really happy. UNC-Chapel Hill was my top choice after the interview and it was just the right fit!

Where will you be going?

Yay!!! What an awesome feeling to find a good match and know you'll be going there.

Currently, I'm waitlisted at THREE places! BOOOO! I'm still waiting to hear from 2 more with an interview on the way. Kinda sucks, but its def not over yet.:xf:

I interviewed at GWU on Dec. 10 and was accepted a few days later. I have interviewed and been accepted at 2 other programs and have 1 more interview this week, but currently I am planning to attend GWU! Anyone else thinking of attending feel free to message me.

It looks like GWU accepts qualified applicants almost immediately and everyone else waits to receive a rejection letter.

Congrats on your acceptance, AmyJoy. I think you will enjoy the sixth floor at Foggy Bottom.

Kevin

Unfortunately, I think you're right. I interviewed on December 10th and seeing everyone who interviewed after me getting acceptance letters definitely has me discouraged on my chance of getting accepted.

Was anyone else invited for a phone interview today? Not sure what to expect since I won't be meeting anyone in person but at least I can wear pajamas?

I interviewed at GW on Jan 7th. I was accepted shortly thereafter. It was a tough choice between Maryland and GW, but in the end I chose GW. Anyone else choosing between the two? Advice? I have two days to change my mind LOL!

DPTB- I got accepted to both Maryland and GW and ended up choosing Maryland. Although GW would have been an easier commute (I could take the metro in) the huge difference in cost helped make my final decision.

Thanks pjr75.

I've tried to weigh the cost issue and I figure that the cost of my relocation within Maryland (housing, utilities, food, etc.) plus tuition (over 3 years) will be almost as expensive as GW's tuition itself (I'd commute to GW via metro from my current home). Just curious about your take on that scenario.

BTW- which program did you like the best (cost aside)? Thanks.

DPTB-I plan to commute to Maryland so I wouldn't have had to relocate either way, but I don't know if that makes up for the tuition difference, keeping in mind that the $95,000 that they quote includes strictly tuition and no additional fees that I am aware of. Cost aside, I think I would still choose Maryland. I thought that I would be partial to GW since I really liked it for undergrad, but the Maryland program and faculty impressed me more. I also liked that Maryland starts in the summer and focuses that whole summer on anatomy instead of putting it with other courses later on, but that is just my personal preference. Other things bothered me about GW too. For instance, GW's class is half the size of Maryland's, but GW has 6 students to a cadaver and Maryland has 4 (plus the tiny GW cadaver lab made me incredibly claustrophobic). Basically, I didn't feel that the extra cost made it worth it for me. Honestly, if money and relocating wasn't an issue, I would have picked Delaware. T be completely honest though, my husband is giving me his GI Bill, which makes Maryland free for me, while GW would still cost me almost $30,000 so it would have had to be spectacular for me to give up a free education.

What made you choose GW, other than not having to relocate?

pjr75- Great perspective! Thanks for sharing. I really don't know what to do. I paid my fee to GW to hold my spot but my declaration to Maryland is due on Friday. So I still have my option. I liked GW's smller class size. I personally do well when the professor can get to know me and become hands on in my progress. The smaller size will also help when I don't have to fight too hard for the clinical location that I want. Quite honestly, it's GW...the name sucked me in a bit as well. Overall, the relocation was the biggest thing. I really don't want to move to baltimore and if I commuted it would be an hour plus on I-95 everyday for me -- each way. The bill for GW scares me, but I'm banking on the fact that the prestige might carry me in future endeavors. I liked Maryland A LOT, but I didn't love their block schedule. I prefer some clinical contact each year as opposed to the last year. Decisions...

If you liked the program better at GW, then the money may be worth it, but I wouldn't pay for the prestige. I don't notice people being especially impressed that my undergrad dregree came from there. Plus, if you're looking at rankings Maryland ranks much higher. I shadowed severl PTs who graduated from Maryland and they were all really good PTs, but I don't know any graduates of GW's program. I can understand not wanting to do the commute. I'm not looking forward to the 45 minute commute tha I will have. I also liked the smaller class size, but like I said, I can't pass up a free education. It's a tough decision. Good luck. Let me know what you decide.

x2. The program is ranked #95 (no matter how much we do or do not believe in this ranking system people look at it) and I don't think GWU carries that much prestige. I have a doctor friend who got his MD/PhD at Mayo and did his residency at GWU and said it was nothing special.

Has anyone heard from GW recently, like in the past week? I'm the parent of an applicant and she interviewed in January. She called earlier this week for an update and was told they'd be sending emails for all acceptances/waitlists/rejections this week or next, but she still hasn't gotten an email. Looks like she'll have to wait through yet another weekend. Like me, this is getting old.

I was at the last interview session 2/4 and I was told all decisions would likely be made at the end of the month. However I'm not expecting good news considering a number of people from my interview group have been accepted already...

When I was sent my acceptance letter, it was written that I had until the 27th (next Monday) to give my decision. I just declined today so I am guessing next week they'll tally up how many spots they have left, remove some people from the waitlist, and send out some more acceptance/waitlist notifications.

Thanks for the info. I knew some applicants were receiving acceptances shortly after their interviews, but I didn't hear about anyone being waitlisted or rejected. So I guessed she (my daughter) was waitlisted, at best. I suppose they wanted to wait until the interview process was over before informing the rest of the applicants of their status.

Yes my guess is there is no official waitlist yet, but rather applicants who have not received any notification yet. Once they have 30 deposits they will probably create a wait list in case anyone bails.
