Does anyone know if you have to have taken Step 3 before being eligible to get an H1-B visa??

I've seen some residency programs that want their applicants to have taken Step 3 before they are willing to grant them an H1-B and was wondering if this is just a program-specific requirement, or is it an actual H1-B requirement? It would be really tough to swing graduating (a requirement to take Step 3), scheduling and then taking the exam, then applying for the visa (once you know your results) and actually having it approved, all before starting residency in June/July.

Anyone have any idea?

I know for a fact that Step 3 is a must for H1B. It doesn't have anything to do with the program, it is an actual H1B requirement.

It is an actual H1b requirement.
You CAN file for the H1b before you have your step3 result, but your employer will receive a 'request for additional evidence' which can delay the case. If you are in a time crunch with step3, you mighth have to file for the H1b through 'premium processing' which guarantees a 30 day turn-around.

I just read on a web page somewhere that Step 3 is not required for an H1-B if you are graduating from a US med school (which I am). Mabye it's only needed for graduates of foreign schools who are applying for US residencies?? I'm trying to find more information on this. Does anyone know anything about this?

You have to be able to obtain a medical license for an H1b, and that is in the eyes of the goverment the step3. There might be something special for US grads, you also have the option to start your residency on an OPT for the first year (if there is for example a quota issue at a for-profit hospital).

It is common for Canadians to ahve to delay residency for a year due to Step 3 and H1B delays.

I've been looking into it a little more and it looks like the OPT year is the best way (for me) to start residency. I can apply for it as soon as I match (March) to have it start in July, then apply for my H1-B sometime during my PGY-1 year, after I have taken Step 3. I don't think you need Step 3 to get the OPT authorized.
