And why should I care?

Not like I can improve my writing anyhow at this point.

Maybe I'll do one or two, just to get the process down.

I think that's the only thing worthwhile doing

Your writing does improve, because you only have 30 minutes to write the essay. Getting the timing down is really important, because the more you practice, the closer in quality your writing sample is going to be to the quality of essays you can write in one hour's time.

I think you should do at least two or three practice essays, timed. I didn't practice a single essay before my last MCAT and I sort of panicked during the test. Needless to say, I scored a disappointing N 👎

I don't even really know what the essay consists of

we have to write something?

no, that's the one section i'm comfortable with... I'll definitely get an A in that one... 😍

It's not about improving the quality of your writing, which you probably won't at this point. It's about getting the timing down and learning to think in a manner that will allow you to construct logical arguments.

I'd recommend folks to be very careful about assuming they'll do well in the writing section without practice. I got pretty spanked the first time I did it.

They are not looking for good writing. They are looking for you to jump through the hoops they're expecting on the essay. There is a punchlist you have to hit or will be marked down. You can write with the best of 'em, but without a bit (albeit, a very little bit) of practice, it's easy to do poorly.

an A is probably the lowest thing possible, since they are graded from J to T, with T being the highest score

Maybe I am a little cynical but you might at least review one of the prep companies guidelines. I used TPR's and it worked out pretty well for me.

PS, you are taking the MCAT's and didn't know you had to write something?!!

😉

It'd be really impressive if you got an A....
Since it is scored J-T... and since J is the worst, you'd have to score off the charts awful to get an A. :meanie:

Of course I knew! I just wish that were my main concern. I am comfortable with the synthesis of that section at least. J-T of course...

How come people applying in the States don't care about the Writing Sample? You people are so lucky...not having to spend time writing tons and tons of pathetic essays =(

i'm canada and apparantly the WS is more imporatnt up hjere, but i've heard that still it is alot less important than the other sections... correct me if i'm worng.

Do y'all write in French or English?

I think it's just as important as any other section in Canada. If you don't make the cut-offs for any section, you're just screwed since you get no interview at all.

well there is a cutoff for the writing sample for some univeristies in canada.. but not all (i'm not sure what the majority is)... but still my understanding is the PS, BS and VR are more important and thus have higher cutoffs than the WS. I wouldn;t be too worried about it.
