Harbor-UCLA elective advice

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I loved my MICU month and my C-team month. BOth were great experiences. That being said, the ER was fabulous as well. Avoid anything surgical.

Most of the IM residents carry a folder with all the blank forms that may need to be filled out with them on rounds. That way you can just get it down with instead of going back and forth for a CT form here, or Echo form there, etc. Learn as much Spanish as you can. Or at least tailor your learning to your specialty, i.e I can get a chest pain story completly in Spanish but I can't get a good OB history

What if I don't know any Spanish? Can I get by at Harbor? Will there be translators available in hospital to help me out? What percentage of patients speak Spanish only?

You can get by w/o speaking spanish, there is usually someone around (nurse, janitor, orderly, student) who can help.

As far as elective, if you are thinking about anything cosmetic (ocucloplastics, derm/mohs) I've heard the plasics rotation you can close alot and make it look nice (opth pgy2 who did this rotation told me this). Oh yeah the derm rotation is 4 half days/week that's it, and the chair is a hella funny guy to work with.

What about Olive View-UCLA? Can I also get by without any knowledge of Spanish?

Who is an appropriate candidate for TY at UCLA Harbor. What type of board scores are they lookin for? WHat type of grades and research experience? Can someone post an overall idea of what type of person UCLA is looking for fill a TY position
