Has anyone else had a hard time finding a doctor to shadow or even get healthcare volunteer experience. I tried to get a volunteer job at my local hospital but they said they are pretty full and they dont really need more volunteers. What is that about..........They are overcrowed with volunteers. The lady at the hospital said they are overcrowed with premeds trying to volunteer for med school. I know med school acceptance is competive, but I cant believe how competive it is even to get volunteer experience.

And how about doctor shadowing. Hippa is such bull****......I have talked to 5 different doctors 2 of which know me very well, and none of them will take on a student to shadow them because of all of the hippa rules. I cant seem to get healthcare experience and it is vitally important. Anyone have any advice for a porn star like me?

Blame HIPAA on the banker that called in the mortgages of his customers who he found out had cancer.

How important is shadowing? I just had a meeting with a doctor who sits on UNMC's committee, and I was asking him if he could help me find someone to shadow. He all but told me it would be a waste of my time. He said that I know I want to be a doctor, so what would I be proving if I spent some time in a hospital. Has anyone had a similar experience, or is this guy just nuts? I thought that shadowing was something that every med school committee looked for.

Not at the place I volunteer, they absolutely love the fact that I volunteer there on regular basis. Do you live in a big city? The hospital that I volunteer at is in a small area, so maybe thats why.

Why not volunteer at a free medical clinic? You can volunteer in a medical setting and usually get to do a lot more than what the hospital allows. 👍

The same thing happened to me this summer

That's very interesting, isn't it? It gets you to think - and it also makes me somewhat disgusted at myself, thinking how many places in the world have desperate needs that aren't being met and here we have "volunteer overcrowding" 🙁 i feel bad

How do you know you want to be a doctor if you've never actually seen what a doctor does (i.e. shadowing and volunteering)? I think you may have misinterpretted your source.

👍

What about Extern programs?

Seriously, this girl came into my job went up the attending and asked if she can shadow him for a day if not him a resident. He told her to come back for a night tour and hooked her up with an resident.. If your in the NYC area look into city owned hospitals..

Whoa, that sucks. My school participates in a program that hooks you up with docs to shadow. I've observed orthopedic surgery, anesthesiology, general surgery, ER medicine and neurosurgery. I was connected with an ER doc, general surgeon, and an orthopedic surgeon, and I personally know an anesthesiologist that I shadowed (I mowed his lawn 😀) as well as a neurosurgeon (I spray his trees 😀), and a few other high-end doctors (we do their landscape 😀).

Thanks for making everyone else feel bad.

I try.......

Seriously though, look for a program that will do this, or talk to your own doctor (you could probably still call your pediatrician, you could ask your internist, your mom probably has an OB/GYN, and one of your parents may have seen a specialist for something) and see if he has any friends who would let you shadow them.

I gotta admit; I'm jealous. 🙁
