I am taking Chem 2 at my university this summer in a 6 week session. I did average (C) in Chem 1 but am struggling with Chem 2. I think it is because it is so compacted into a short period of time. My professor is great and helps but there are no tutors and I have to work almost full time as an EMT to pay for everything. My other grades are okay (B in Bio I, B in Physics I, C in A & P I, F in A & P II...that last one is a long story).

I plan on getting my paramedic this fall while taking classes part-time. Also, I am not even considering applying to medical school without first attempting a post-bac program in the next few years. I am slowing down my undergrad though so I can work and take classes.

Would it be best for me to just take Chem II next Spring and focus on a few other classes I will be taking in the Fall? I am in no rush.

thank you in advance,
dxu

Since you want advice I'll offer what I think. Yes, wait and take Chem II next Spring. You need to get at least a C in it and by the tone of your post it sounds like you might not do that. If you think you can and you are happy with a C then I guess try and stick it out. Good luck either way! 🙂

there is never a need for a post-bacc if you are still in undergrad... just retake the courses and score better! a post-bacc is more expensive than the equivalent credit load during undergrad.

If you can, I would wait on the course. It think that would mean withdrawing at this point. Mostly because you have to work so much with this course. I found Chem II to be a challenging course in a regular semester- I am a pretty strong student. It requires a good time dedication and strong algebra foundation. It's great that your prof is supportive, but do it when you can really dedicate to doing very well. Maybe save some money this summer and if you can, you can still study the material...Good luck!🙂

Chem I isn't a cakewalk, Chem II is going to be brutal ESPECIALLY if you only have an average understanding of chem I. Can you maybe drop II and retake I this summer? ONLY retake it if you think you can pull off an A this time, but you might be better to retake it now and get it out of the way since you're already familiar with the material.

In my opinion, a withdrawl is better than a C or lower (though I have had a few C+'s in Chem myself). If you know you are going to do poorly in the class just get out of it before you get any kind of transcript notice (but even if you do its not the end of the world just don't make a habit of it). That way when you take the class again you will own it. This happens to everyone though, just make sure you don't get behind (been there too, now going to have to take a few quarters next year four upper div a pop - arggg), but you'll be fine. It sounds like you are fairly early in your undergrad career. Good luck, you'll be fine!!

If you are going to fail then drop it. I'm also concerned by the fact that you don't even have 1 A in a pre-req...Best advice I can say is to go ahead and start retaking those classes! Chem I and II aren't THAT hard...I'm concerned more for you in Biochem and Organic since you are struggling in your other classes as well. Good luck though!
