so i was talking to this guy today and he said that he had already been accepted to harvard medical school for the upcoming year. i asked him if he had been accepted last year and deferred the offer for a year, since HMS only sends out acceptances after march, and he said that no, he had applied this year, and he received a special e-mail from HMS telling him of his acceptance. i think he's full of crap. does anyone know if this happens?

Harvard doesn't mail out acceptances till the first week of March.

The plot thickens.

Maybe he was MD/PhD. Don't they have a different schedule for notification?

the website says that ALL applicants will be notified in march...

that's what i thought, but he claims that he was contacted via e-mail...

It was probably a rejection and he just misread.

I haven't heard of any exceptions to acceptances being non-rolling for Harvard so I think your friend is just messing with you.

haha, he's not messing with me though. i actually overheard him telling someone else he was trying to decide between UCSF and harvard, so i asked him if he had deferred acceptances from last year...

That's strange. I'm pretty sure that they said during my interview that all decisions are made in March, but he may be telling the truth. Maybe somebody played a joke on him, or maybe he was just trying to brag... who knows?

someone willing to lie about an acceptance is the kind of person that might as well make it a harvard acceptance.

I am quite sure that Harvard sends out all decisions in March.

Yeah man, your friend is a liar.

This is not the first I've heard of this. I have a friend who's college roommate was already notified.

They actually called one of my recommenders today to talk about me, since they're deciding on my file today. Only reason I know was because this guy works with me and told me.

Whoa, they're deciding on files already???? :scared: It's scary to think that things are moving already! Good luck, Aynsl!

IIRC, one of my interviewers told me that your file goes to a subcommittee around a month after your interview, and the subcommittee decides whether or not your file should be sent to the main committee. Maybe that's where Aynsl's file is.

Thanks for the helpful information, LovelyMD! I recall hearing about the subcommittee/committee process and the interview ranking stuff, but I didn't realize that it happened so quickly. I kind of wish they'd mail out rejection letters earlier. It's unnerving to think that I've probably already been rejected. Well, we'll all figure out in several looong weeks. Thanks again (and good luck! I'm betting that you'll be getting lots of great news in March!).

the same thing happened to me a couple of weeks ago: my recommender told me that he was contacted by HMS to talk about my "personal qualities." He could not divulge too many details. Is this a good thing, I wonder?

out of curiosity, I wonder what would warrant an early e-mail acceptance if the OP's friend was in fact telling the truth, special circumstances or just an incomparably phenomenal candidate?

Ask your friend to show you the email, because I would bet he's full of crap.

It's pretty cool, though, that they actually call letter writers to talk about the applicant's personal qualities. I have not heard about that happening at other medical schools. Hopefully my writers will have a lot of good things to say, and that will bump my chances!

i buy it actually

I know that Harvard in the past has notified MD/Ph.D. candidates before March. It is not that uncommon. I know someone who was accepted for their M.D./Ph.D. class in January last year.

However, I am pretty sure all M.D. candidates find out in March.

I heard from someone that the committee does meet in November to make some decisions... Most of us have to wait until March though.

do you know when in nov, like beginning or end? just wonder because of my interview date in nov

Check out this profile http://www.mdapplicants.com/viewprofile.php?id=9782

This applicant is a Harvard student. Harvard is in his claimed "accepted" list.

The strange thing is that, though accepted, he does not even consider entering HMS -- as he only talks about choosing between Baylor and Hopkins.

And he does say that he is applying for the MD/PhD Program.

If the Harvard in fact sends out "MD only" acceptances before March, Harvard should say so in their website.

He also mentions being accepted to Yale and Columbia... both are non-rolling schools (at least for M.D. applicants). His list of schools looks a wee bit odd... He's a Massachusetts resident, so why would he apply to UMDNJ and UTSW, but not U Mass? Also, pardon my ignorance of the Texas match system, do people just apply to one Texas school? Don't they generally apply to all/a whole bunch of them?

He might have decided that he liked Baylor and Hopkins WAY more than he liked Harvard, so that's why he doesn't consider HMS. It's quite possible for someone to not like Harvard. Of course,*I* wouldn't EVER choose either of those schools over Harvard (...seeing as neither Baylor nor Hopkins has invited me to interview 😛).

Either it's a lie, or he is a legacy with a rich father.

More likely that this guy simply choose the wrong matriculation year.

That's possible, but doesn't seem too likely. The MD Applicants ID is 9782- a fairly high number. The higher the MD applicants number, the more recently the profile was created. I'm guessing that this profile was created in the past several weeks. It could be someone from a previous application cycle who just recently decided to post his application profile... but I'm guessing that's not too likely. Also, if he has some kind of crazy legacy factor going on, there's no way he could get into Harvard, Yale, and Columbia- all decidely non-rolling schools (unless he has a legacy at all three- maybe his mom went to Columbia medical and his dad went to Yale and now they're both faculty at Harvard?). I'm still convinced that 9782 is a fake profile. All of this is, of course, all nothing more than my speculation. Fun, but about as substantive as marshmallow.

...See, the question I should be asking is not whether this profile is legitimate, but why it matters to me. Shouldn't I be doing something more productive??

maybe he accidentally clicked the harvard box for accepted when it was really for something else i did that too the first time i tried setting up an mdapps (got all dizzy looking at everything and clicked some wrong boxes) hehe

there are quite a few premeds out there who are full of crap... don't believe everything you hear!

I think the above could be applied to just about anything we obsess over on this website.

But you do make a good point about the profile's "age"...If it's some weird gunner trying to psych everyone out then it's a lame move since early admission to multiple non-rolling schools isn't realistic.

First that poster doesn't say anything about applying MD/PhD (and mentions the cost of several schools and a full-tuition scholarship at one). I don't buy it for a second...

hms second year here (procrastinating from boards study)...

i can't speak for certain for md-phd, but regular md acceptances absolutely don't go out until march.

in my application year ('06), the first rejections were received on march 11th. acceptances started rolling in on the 15th. five of the most nerve-wracking days of my life!

good luck to everyone... i hope you all wind up someplace you'll love, whether it's hms or elsewhere :luck:

Was he talking to an attractive girl at the time? Because that changes everything.

I would not be surprised if the guy is telling the truth.

Almost all the applicants that receive interview invites are phenomenal, but even of that bunch, I am sure there are a few that *really* stand out. Harvard, although it is one of the best medical schools out there, is still competing with Hopkins and many other top-tier schools to recruit the best of the best students and if the committee members were all wooed by said candidate, I wouldn't be surprised if they decided to notify him early to ensure holding his interest in HMS.

My PI, wayyy back in the day, got into HMS with out even writing an application. He did however perfect many surgical techniques while in college and started HMS at age 19...so yeah, there are people out there that are just born amazing. All the power to you guys 🙂

Interesting...

Don't forget the "secret" financial aid notification page ( do a search). I found out about 10 days before the package actually arrived.

Harvard woo-ing students to to ensure his holding interest? Yea right. More like Harvard assumes we all love that school automatically.

Ok...so I'm starting to get that "generic error" message that people got 1 year ago. Is anyone else getting that message?

what's the url for the finaid website? i'm pretty sure that it's still too premature for the "loophole" to be in effect...

Since it seems that interviews are running later this year (first/second week of March), do you think final decisions will be released later as well? (i.e. end of March?)

Ya i was wondering the same. I bet people in the later interview groups would have a better idea. Anyone know for certain?

Dude also sounds like a total douche...see some of his comments on the schools? I say it's a lie...

I know someone who says he got into the MD/PhD program at Harvard. Do those decisions come out before March?
