harvard acceptances?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know someone who says he got into the MD/PhD program at Harvard. Do those decisions come out before March?

Even for MD/PhD applicants, results will be announced in March, according to Harvard's MD-PhD Admissions FAQ # 12:

http://www.hms.harvard.edu/md_phd/application/faqs.htm#d10

"12. When are applicants notified of final admissions decisions?</FONT size="3" color="#990000">
Final decision letters are typically mailed to applicants in March. "

I think "typically" is the key word here. I definitely know someone who got into Harvard MD/PhD in 2006 in January. He is now going there.

Maybe, maybe not.

Either way I can't login.

No luck, but last year people only started getting the "please contact the financial aid office" message around the 13th or so.

Nobody could actually log in earlier. But they have noticed in years past that accepted people get different messages than those that are rejected or waitlisted.

Something like: Login failed = rejected and "information not yet available. Please contact FA office" = accepted.

I checked last year though, and someone made a post on March 12th saying it said "login failed" and then a post on march 14th saying it said "please contact FA office."

So at the moment, I would be surprised if anyone gets anything other than login failed.

Or...maybe I'm just consoling myself.

A student ID is required for login. So, Harvard just adopts the AMCAS number as acceptees' student ID?

Per the link, incoming students use their SSN as the login ID and their AMCAS ID as the PIN.

bump...

i want pages and pages of worthless posting in the days leading up to harvard decisions - we're no where close to last year's thread!

hahaha here's my contribution:

I have a friend who is interviewing at HMS tomorrow...anyone want to speculate on his chances at this point??(I guess we will all find out in a few more weeks!)

I don't speculate - I have my own way of worthless posting

theyre still interviewing! i guess im not surprised but does this mean we wont hear back till the end of march like penn?

this is my second post ever on SDN. consider it a donation...

A friend who is a MS1 at Harvard told me that she thinks this is the last week for HMS interviews.

I'm sure there will be a lot more traffic right before decisions are due to be mailed out *twiddles thumbs*

i interviewed last week. they told us tomorrow (3/4) is the last day of interviews and decisions might go out the 10th or 12th.

No way - that I DO NOT believe....10th or 12th?? That's next week - and last year Harvard stopped interviewing end of Feb. and decisions came out around the 14th (through the finaid loophole) but mainly the 19th

hrm...would be interesting if decisions did come out that early

They're going to SEND them out on the 10th or the 12th. They'll probably do it by sending the mail the old-fashioned way on horseback. That way, it'll really take a week or more.

Wait, does this also mean we'll be getting rejections soon? I'd like some closure.

ditto on the closure. i'm about 99.9% sure i'm rejected. i emailed my first interviewer a question post-interview, like he invited me to, as well as a request to send an additional LOR from someone we talked about a lot in the interview. that was several weeks ago and still no answer. i think he knows i have no chance.

OMG that is so soon, would be crazy if they came out that early!!! how can they be interviewing for some people tomorrow and then decide 6 days laterrrrr😕

LOL glad you say that, same thing here. I dont even know why they tell you to email them, I would feel more comfortable with a "You are Rejected" reply than silence.

So maybe the finaid loophole will work around the 8th-9th? Anyone care to extrapolate or are should I just compulsively check it.

A friend of mine, first year at HMS, said they lengthened the process because they had fewer applicants this year. They told us that in the interview as well, so I guess they wanted to have more to choose lol 🙂

OHMYGODMARCH12THTHAT'SNEXTWEEK
HYPERVENTILATE
HYPERVENTILATE
...I think one of my kidneys just spontaneously combusted.

My guess is that things will go out the week after that. The official website says that decisions will be mailed by the third week of March.

Haha. I also emailed my interviewer upon follow-up as he told me to - he gave me his card and told me to email, etc. and yet i heard nothing from him. Has anyone else had this happen besides us??

A number of people on this board mentioned that their rec letter writers got calls asking about the applicant and that this was a sign of being in the final committee. Does anyone know if this is true-AKA is having you rec writers called a prerequisite to admission? My rec writers, as far as I know, have not been called...

I think that they only made calls for people when they had follow up questions from the interview (e.g. if they want to know more about how an applicant handles pressure) or if there was a discrepancy between the two interviewers' reports. No call = no problem.

The latest developments in this thread are too much. I think I need an SDN vacation...

Yea it happened to me too. Do you remember your interview's name? May be we both had the same absent minded guy

Although last year MSTP phone calls were a couple of days before MD-only people found out

Yea, but I'm going to say that previous post of a MSTP student finding out before March is false.

I am gonna have to disagree with you. MSTP decisions coming in march is not a strict policy. In years past, some candidates have actually heard about their HST MSTP decisions in early January. Though it is my understanding that the committee doesn't advertise that. I think these early decisions are reserved for the very stellar candidates (we are talking 42 MCAT, 3.99 GPA, 5 publications). I am absolutely sure about this because the stats I just described put someone that I know in that position last year.

P.S. HST MSTP is different than New Pathway MSTP.

On my interview day our tour guides told us not to get discouraged if we didn't hear back from any of our interviewers. They said they only got replies back after they were accepted because of some sort of policy Harvard has about interviewers contacting applicants.
So don't lose hope if you haven't heard back!

so if the 10th-12th estimate is correct (which I highly doubt) then anywhere from 6 - 8 days we should know

right....I'm guessing the 17th

I contacted my interviewer and did hear back, albeit after a delay of a couple weeks. In our interview he invited me to "go on rounds" with him since we work in the same hospital. They turned out to be teaching rounds involving no actual patients, but it was interesting nonetheless. The fact that numerous people seem to have been invited to contact their interviewers makes me think interviewers might be encouraged to make this invitation. Or, alternately, they could have done so on their own initiative and the delay might have been caused by their checking with the admissions office to see if it was ok.

Idle speculation. Any Boston locals enjoying this weather?

Then I'm going to say thats the exceedingly lone exception, rather than the norm or even a rare occurrence.

Well, my interviewer was a doctor (male one), and he was so nice, so I feel its weird him not replying. I also happen to know somebody else whose interviewer did not reply to him, so I guess its common in some cases. But something is tells me its really bad 🙁

I have been complete since August. I assume they are still granting interviews because I have yet to hear from them. Does anyone know anything concerning them?

Yeah- last interviews are done.

To those worried about interviewers not getting back to you-- do not overanalyze! I was worried at first b/c my interviewers did not reply back to me but one of them is studying for his boards and the other one is Chief of Medicine.... I had a connection with both my interviewers so I don't think they are ignoring me,they are just busy folks!

I know a couple of interviewers in my lab too and I know that they haven't gotten back to their interviewees yet because they have papers to publish and patients to see.

so.....don't stress😎, and good luck all!:luck:

Even acknowledging the idea that decisions will be out soon could make me spontaneously combust. Is anyone else worried none of their LOR writers were contacted? Is it already game over?

At my HST interview one of the current students mentioned something about the adcom "confirming" your letters with your letter writers after accepting you (apparently the same held true for NP). I'm not really quite sure what's meant by "confirming", but she said that her letter writers were sent an email from the adcom that was supposed to be confidential (i.e. they weren't supposed to tell her about it). Anyhow, I have no idea if they're doing the same thing this year. If they did this for every single acceptee, you'd think that roughly 1/4 of the posters here would have had their LOR writers contacted...

Hmm, that's interesting. Half of my letter writers have changed institutions since the time they wrote my recs. If they did try to contact mine, they might run into some problems...

well, that's good to hear, i guess. i should have just sent that extra lor without asking. it couldn't have hurt, right? it would have been a really good one, too. oh well, what's done is done...
