Come to think of it, I've never been treated by a Harvard doctor. I don't think many of them practice in "regular" (non-affiliated) hospitals.

Sure they do....I know of several at my local community hospital (that I wouldn't be caught dead at...or wait, I would probably only be caught dead at). Then again, I'm from Massachusetts, so it's probably a population density thing. 🙂

Haha, true🙂

As a CA resident, I suppose not many make the trip over here.

this would all be so much easier if someone (parents, friends, coworkers, random people i barely know) didn't ask me every five minutes if i've heard from harvard yet. no one seems to care as much about all of the other great schools. i think i could deal with the disappointment of a rejection much more easily if i wouldn't have to tell all of those people about it.
thank god for ben and jerry's, keeping me semi-sane through all of this.

Lol, I have the exact same problem. It's like if I don't get into Harvard, I haven't gotten into med school at all. For now, my outing is French dark chocolate. Hey, it reduces cholesterol so why not.

That, and CA hospitals are probably flooded with UC and Stanford doctors. 🙂

My mom--who has NO HMS connection, and no foundation to base this claim on--has been randomly decreeing that she thinks this weekend is "The Big Weekend"...as in she thinks Harvard decisions come out. It's driving me nuts. 😱

I'd just like to go to school closer to home. I've done the away thing, now I'd like to be back in frigid, freezing, lovely MA. You hear that Harvard!??!

I can't count the number of times my parents have called just to ask "Have you heard from Harvard yet?." Even when I told them I would not hear anything until March they still made a point to ask me,. Now that March has finally come, I think the wait is more brutal for them than it is for me.

I don't think it was shallow. She wasn't accusing Harvard of wanting people who have no lives out of school in her statement. She was simply describing herself honestly.

Thanks pyrois...I hope you get into Harvard (and not b/c you'd be freeing a spot at Mayo)😉

It was during my response to the, "so, how'd you get here?" question. I hate that question. I am 26- to answer that would take hours. I basically told them I didn't know how I got there. Being from a state school, a mom, and with a relatively low MCAT score- I thought I had no real chance. I only applied b/c I figured it couldn't hurt (plus I'd get a rejection on that pretty Harvard stationary). I told the interviewer that it seemed most of my preconceived notions of Harvard were false. Being only the second person in my family to attempt college and the first to try graduate work...I never knew schools of Harvard’s caliber would even consider me. In my mind Harvard kids were upper-middle class geniuses that spoke Latin and read Tolstoy for fun. I told my interviewers that I would not want to go to a school which was not a good fit for me, it would not be beneficial for me nor the school. Since they are much more qualified than I to judge ones "fit", I would be thrilled if accepted, but not unhappy if rejected because I would know they didn't think a Melissa-Harvard joining would be mutually beneficial.

has anyone tried the fin aid website and been able to get through yet? i keep trying and nothing... hopefully some of you will have luck!

My parents have asked me the same question a couple times, upon which I respond:

"Mom, you guys receive all my medical school mail. You'll know before I do."

I guess they think I'll get a call or something even though I've told them that Harvard doesn't call😛

Haha, thanks melissa😛 I hope you get in too! It seems that all the admissions committees see something great in you since you've been interviewing at so many great places🙂

And who said anything about getting into Harvard meaning a free spot at Mayo! It may just mean a lot of hair-pulling until April 15th😛 But I'm not going to worry about decisions like that yet. I'm a long ways from having the privilege of being able to make them.

I just called the admissions office:

"Letters will be mailed out the third week of March"

I can confirm this report. I called and they said they would go out the week of March 19.

Isn't that technically the fourth week of March?

Arrrggggggggggg! 🙁

In a way I'm relieved, since I'm leaving my mailbox tomorrow until March 18th.

At the same time, I want the decision ASAP.😎

depends if say the first week began on the 1st or began on the first Sunday...

Well, thus the "technically". 🙂

And of course, status page still says second week of March.

I had totally reached this zen place about decisions...and now I want to scream.

Shucks, more waiting ahead. Oh well. That's a long time to be crossing my fingers.

I've done the patient waiting thing for 5 months now, but no more! 😱

Clearly this is a situation that will only be resolved by Ben & Jerry's.

i like the way you think, foofish. personally i'm partial to edy's "french silk." heaven in a carton, i tell you.

At this rate, Yale's notoriously late non-rolling admissions will go out before Harvard's.

What's with the waiting! Aieeee!

I guess I should calm down then if it's going to be another 2 weeks before I actually receive a letter of some sort from the big H.

freakin-a. my spring break is from 3/23-4/1. so i'm not going to be getting any mail that week. what a way to ruin vakayshun.

Yet another way in which Yale beats Harvard.

Lol. I think i'll join in on the indulging 'just because'

Man, thanks to Harvard we're all gonna be 10 lbs heavier by the time we get those decisions! 😱

Waiting sucks balls.

Why so late if decisions have already been made like Mateodaspy said? And isn't that the fourth week of March?

if you guys don't get in on the initial wave, are you going to keep your hopes up for waitlist movement, or just go ahead and accept defeat?

Some places have asked to RSVP for second look in the next week. However, Harvard and Yale won't get back to me regarding a decision until after that (and I have no idea when their 2nd looks would be in the chance that I did get in). Does anyone know when they are or have the same problem?

When I called, she first said "third week of march". I asked "oh the week of the 12?"--"No, the the week of the 19". I guess they mean third full week.
And as for waitlists, I'll never give up hope!

Never give up! Never surrender!

On the other hand, I'm not looking forward to Harvard's $24,500 unit loan.

At the very least, everybody who goes will be at LEAST $98,000 in debt.

The unlucky ones will be busting out the big $240,000

Looks like we're all going into Radiology/Ortho/Plastics/Derm.

just hold off on reserving tickets I guess...

how bout this one....

anybody have any reservations about taking on the full load of debt ($250k)just to go to harvard?

p.s. i'm just trying to keep some conversation going to help the time pass...

hahah great, the week of the 19th. as if these @#$#ing schools haven't made my life miserable enough, they've found a way to ruin my spring break too. now all i'll be able to think about is that letter that'll be sitting in my mailbox when I get back...

Oh yes, a lot of reservations. There are so many great things about Harvard that I think are a good personal fit for me, but financial aid is really going to matter when it's time to make a decision.

If I even get in... :scared:

Ah well, it's freezing up there, anyway.

To answer someone's earlier q, I think the Harvard revisit is usu. the last weekend of April or first weekend of May ...? Could someone confirm/correct this?

Hmm, am I the only one with parents who aren't so ecstatic about harvard? They said, ok great, you got an interview there. But since you have a full-rider somewhere else (b/c it's MD-PhD), it's a no brainer in their opinion to take that. They don't understand, the interdisciplinary research is so much stronger through the harvard-mit hst program, sigh ... plus, i seriously wouldn't mind the debt. I may not earn much in academic medicine or public health in the future, but will be enough to pay off the loans in a few yrs right? The 4-yr experience will be one of those priceless things in life ...

Now I suppose I could postpone this argument with them for another few weeks, since I won't learn of the hms decision anytime soon 🙄

I think it was around -10 degrees in Boston recently (including windchill), and it's March. However, does anyone else have an idea when their second look could potentially be (though it might seem that asking could potentially jinx things :scared: ) Thanks!

Hey all,

I'm an NP first year and am reliving last year's anticipation just looking at this thread! Can't believe it was a whole year ago.

I don't have any particularly insider information for you right now, but I noticed that some people were talking about revisit. Last year it was the first weekend of May. I'll see if I can find out if a date has been set for this year, and report back!

For your entertainment and any information you can glean from it, here's last year's threadhttp://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=264936

Try not to stress the wait too much (although I sure did!) and I'll check in with you guys if I come upon any useful info.

Good luck!!! :luck:

Nope, you're not alone. My parents aren't all that thrilled about Harvard either. Although I have some good discussion ammunition that I'm saving in case I get in😛

Well, I just discovered that my sister passed for the minimum unit loan from Stanford, but then again Stanford has some amazing financial aid, so I don't know if I'll qualify at a place like Harvard.

Amongst my friends, I'm the "poorest" so to speak, but I don't feel as if I've been poor to the point of being disadvantaged (unless you consider public schooling all the way through a disadvantage... like some of my friends would😛). But maybe other people who attend Harvard are super rich and they set the bar for financial aid?

Anybody have anecdotes of approximate adjusted gross incomes and related financial aid-ness?

Nope, I'm telling my parents that they have to come up with their part and I have to come up with mine according to what it says on the sheet for family versus student contribution. I have a feeling with my net worth = 0 that my expected contribution will be low.

Another night, another Harvard nightmare... this can't be good for the heart 🙁 (are you listening adcoms?!?!). Maybe they'll speed things up if they think they're putting our health at risk:idea:

I remember reading the Harvard thread last year while procrastinating studying for the MCATs, I was rooting for you Risa! Back then, I never would have dreamed I'd be waiting for a Harvard decision this year...

Hah, that's so funny. I was having lunch with my interviewer in my dream (or nightmare) and I kept asking him if I got in. Every time he said "you'll be alright " and gave me an evil grin. :scared:

I wasn't on the SDN back then but if it wasn't for her advice, I wouldn't have applied to Harvard anyways. Go Risa!

Looks like we are in very similar situations amester. I think I am leaning towards the MSTP acceptance though, but that might just be the fear of rejection + extreme laziness in not wanting to fill out need access forms talking.
