any thoughts on the harvard extension Masters of Liberal Arts program?
i have little psychology classes in my background and want to apply for psyd programs in the coming future. Instead of just taking classes as an undergraduate again i wanted a formal program for people like myself going through a career change. The program seems great from what i have read so far online. My long term goal is to finish this program in 2 years and then apply for psyd or PhD programs in the future.
The masters requires you to do research too so I think i'll have decent chances at applying to PHd programs later on too.
Also...somebody has mentioned that some of my classes might be able to used for my PsyD program. I dont know if this is possible and perhaps it depends on the program.

any thoughts?

if this isnt a good program...what should someone like myself do. I only have 9 credits in psych and i want to start a psyd program as soon as possible. What is the best way to achieve that goal?

I have not heard anything about the program you mentioned, so I could not give you any info one way or the other.

Generally speaking, you should look for programs that enable you to take all of the basic undergraduate psychology courses that are considered prerequisites for doctoral study. Typically, PhD and PsyD programs list what these courses are on their websites, but it does not vary too much from program to program. Having said that, the "Insider's Guide to Graduate Programs in Clinical and Counseling Psychology" is a fantastic resource for anyone considering a career in this field. You might find this helpful.

If you choose to attend an MA/MS program, I would look into programs in general/experimental psychology. These programs will give you the opportunity to do research (e.g., master's thesis, work in a lab, do some posters/presentations/publications, etc.) and build a strong foundation in psychology that will be useful in a PhD or PsyD program. However, the drawback will be the time it takes to complete the program. Moreover, it is likely that many, if not most, of your credits will not transfer.

Last, I would also suggest looking into programs that offer Post Baccalaureate Certificates in psychology, like the one at Columbia (see link below). I am not sure how many programs like this actually exist (i.e., I majored in psychology), but it seems consistent with the formalized type of program you are looking to attend. Further, it is probably less labor and time intensive than a Master's Program of any type. Someone I worked with a couple of years ago went through this program and said it was very helpful. However, I never asked for details about it so I can't offer you much more in the way of detailed information.

I hope this information is helpful. Good luck in your pursuits!!!!
