'Ello, 'ello!

I look forward to seeing you all--bleary-eyed and weak from studying--for the next two years. Just thought I'd conspire and get some thoughts from my fellow HCP admittees.

I wanted to know what your plan was for maintaining a cash flow during this period of time:

Are you guys working full-time? Are you taking out loans? Maybe a combo of both?

Currently, I'm waiting to receive my letter from the financial aid office (should be soon, no?), and I suppose I'll go from there. I was planning to work at least part-time, and if I'm lucky work in a hospital to capitalize on my precious free time.

*taps microphone*

*cough*

...Just hoping to get a dynamic conversation going to bounce ideas off one another. Don't be shy.

You might need to wait longer than an hr and 20 minutes for a response...

This forum isnt the fastest paced at the best of times and its a bit slow these days

So........

You replied to tell me to wait for a reply.

Sweet.

I plan on working while I am attending HCP. I live in Boston and have a part time job now but I am looking for work in a hospital if possible. I posted once on the Official Harvard thread about finding work in local hospitals - many of them, including MGH and Childrens, etc., have a generous tuition assistance that you could use to pay for classes. Even if you land a job that is not relevant to medicine that would be helpful! And also just being in a hospital setting would be useful ...

Good luck!

So...

You started a thread which clearly belongs in a school specific discussion (http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?p=9817847#post9817847 ) which you appear to be familiar with.

So, uh, yeah, sweet.

I started this post so that others might gain insight without having to sift through a tediously-long, generic thread. And, more specifically, I'm not asking about the program itself--I'm addressing what people in the Boston area are doing for work within the context of attending a post-baccalaureate program. Considering the Fall semester starts in under 12 weeks, this is a topic of imminent importance as many people--such as myself--are coming from out of state and will be needing employment.

However, I appreciate you pointing me back to the topic I have been replying to for some weeks.

Tuition assistance?! BRILLIANT! I imagine those positions are hard to come by, what with the numbers of students looking into them.

And, from student to student, is finding work in Boston pretty rugged? California's economy is tanking rapidly and it took me several months to get anything out here, despite aggressive resume submitting 😉

The way I understand it, if you land an academic research job at one of the Harvard labs you get a deduction on tuition. I've heard it's pretty easy to get one too, since there's probably lots of turnover in lab assistants. (Website: http://www.employment.harvard.edu/) Only downside is finding one that fits the requisite hours, whilst giving you enough time to perform well in your classes.

Per-fect. Thanks!

Glancing through the employment site, it looks like most of the Research positions for lab assistants require some kind of prior coursework or experience in a related field. Considering that most of the post-bacc students have not taken these prereqs or have this experience, would they still be considered as candidates for these positions?

Maybe it would be easier to get a lab assistant job after a years worth of courses ... I had a friend who worked at Harvard (not in a science-related position) and she only paid around $40 for each class she took! It might also be worth your time to look for admin jobs in the Harvard school of public health and the school of medicine - you would still have plenty of contact with doctors and probably would get handed a few research-type projects every now and then.
