School 1: Harvard (OOS)
Pros:
  • P/F
  • Flexible curriculum that you can tailor to your interests
  • Awesome externship program in D4 year to community organizations or with specialists
  • Extremely high caliber of faculty
  • Strong alumni networks
  • Very empowering program to help you get to wherever your goals are
Cons:
  • I want to specialize but I'm unsure of exactly what I want to specialize in.
  • Price!! More than double the school tuition/fees of UNC!
  • Unsure of how I will like living in Boston. Not a huge fan of big cities.
  • Pro and con for me, but mandatory research project during dental school
  • Additionally pro and con that the class size is so small
School 2: UNC (OOS)
Pros:
  • Price - obtained a great scholarship & I have other factors to lower my school tuition/fees to under 200k. I'll be paying for school through loans from family ~ no interest.
  • P/F
  • Very well-rounded school
  • Larger class
  • Great vibes
  • Nice city, I like North Carolina
  • Larger support system in NC
Cons:
  • Honestly no big cons. Maybe just that it's the South and I'm from the midwest.
Basically, is Harvard worth choosing over UNC? Thank you.

UNC is a great school and will cost you less than half as much
IMO, you should not choose harvard, even if you liked big cities...

You can’t go to UNC over Harvard…you’re too “smaht” for that.

But in all seriousness I chose to go to the cheapest school and graduated under 200k in debt and the post school freedom has been nice. I’ll have my loans paid off in about 6 years instead of 20. Go to the cheaper school if you’re smart. Go to Harvard if you’re “smaht”.

My daughter faces the same decision - accepted to both Harvard and UNC. Her preference is UNC, however she is having difficultly making a decision, especially as she’s gunning for an oral surgery residency. Is it possible that you and she can have a private conversation?
