Harvard stuff

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats!

-don't be intimidated by the other interviewees on that date....before my interview, some of the applicants were trying to brag about their CVs and sound impressive....it was quite sad

-be prepared to spend most of your day wandering the campus as you'll get a ton of down time....make a list of things you want to do during this time

-be happy! It's a unique privilege to even have the opportunity to interview at HMS

if you don't mind me asking, my roommate is going crazy about harvard. When were you complete and what dates did they offer you for interview?

hello,
I was complete in early December, and I was offered February dates.

i couldnt find a "Harvard only thread" but I just received an invite this morning.. and tips/advice about the interviews?

CONGRATULATIONS!!! Just try really, really hard to relax (this is a challenge) and be yourself. The interview day is a LOT of fun! The hardest part is waiting to get the decision envelope (but if you're interviewing in February, at least you don't have *too* long to wait). The interviews are truly conversational and relaxed. Harvard invited you because they think that you're awesome, so here's your chance to give them more reasons to accept you. As everyone says, there's a lot of downtime. The admissions office gives you a brochure with some suggested tours, so there's no reason to sit in the admissions office and be bored. Check out Phineas Gage's skull in the library. Maybe my day was an anomaly, but I found that my fellow interviewees were all really nice and didn't even bring up their resumes. We were all pretty chatty (or maybe my excessive chattiness ended up being infectious 😛). I interviewed on the Saturday of a three-day weekend, so the campus was very quiet (and I had to try several times to find a student host who was available). However, because the dining halls were closed, the admissions staff ordered pizza and chicken caesar salad for us and I didn't experience the notorious Harvard cafeteria food. I *HIGHLY* recommend staying with a student host. The HMS students are so much fun to hang out with and offer a very good perspective of life at Harvard. My student host really, really took care of me and made me feel superbly welcome. Congrats again and GOOD LUCK :luck:!

enjoy the day! everything is VERY laid back and conversation. During your interview, just talk - all they want to know is who you are! The good thing is that when you get there you will look around and notice that everyone else is sh**ing their pants; so relax and enjoy it.
Yes, see Phineas Gage's skull and the anesthesia stuff.
Also, walk around the campus and just relax. If you are there for a night, head over to cambridge (Mass ave) for good bars and dancing, etc.
Best of luck!
I was complete ~Sept and interviewed in Dec.

hello,

Congratulations! Good luck at your interview! I was also complete early December so your good news gives me some hope.

Congrats on your interview. I interviewed in early October so the wait is killing me! The interviews are very informal and conversational. I had a pretty good group and we all got along pretty well, but that will of course differ day to day. Just be prepared for loads of free time. After the morning meeting they pretty much just told us to do whatever we wanted to before our interviews and the tour. I visited the Children's Hospital and highly recommend doing the same. Otherwise, I just kind of walked around the campus to get a feel for everything. The students were great. I was with a fellow interviewee and a whole bunch of students stopped by after their exam to talk to us. You might get two faculty interviews instead of one fac and one student interview. The norm seems to be having one of each, so I'm wondering why I had two faculty interviews. Oh well. Anyways, good luck and have fun!

Maybe they just didn't have enough student interviewers for your particular day (that happened to me at a few other schools).

I agree with what everyone has been saying, except for the poster who said that people were bragging-- but again, that probably varies depending on what the people in your group are like. Try not to be intimidated though, because even if people aren't bragging about their resumes, you will quickly realize that your fellow interviewees are very impressive people. Everyone was involved in some really interesting and awesome things. They were definitely the kind of people I would hang out with.

...did you interview with me? (4th)

I also had two faculty interviews, since there were no students available for that day.

I also had two faculty interviews. I didn't even realize Harvard had student interviewers.

DRESS WARMLY! i interviewed in late nov. but i can imagine that it will be much colder in february. good luck! even though they interview quite a few people, they make you feel pretty special for being there. enjoy your day and relax 😉

Hey RPedigo,

I interviewed the day after you I think. I can't wait to hear back (though I'm not expecting too much)

I had two faculty interviews: I heard that it's tough to get a student interviewer due to their schedules.

I just got my HST interview invite today. Are the HST interviews done the same as the New Pathways interviews? Can anyone who interviewed HST (preferably just MD not MD/PhD) tell me what it is like?

Ah, ok... just missed you!

Yeah, I think my first interview went fantastically but the second one I didn't seem to 'click' with my interviewer. He seemed like a nice guy, but for some reason we weren't on the same wavelength. Such is life.

Grats and good luck to you guys with future HMS interviews! Does anyone who has already interviewed remember what they told us about when we might hear back about whatever decision we're given (I'm applying NP)? Thanks =)

According to the MSAR, they send decisions on February 29th. According to the booklet they gave us at the interview, they send decisions in the first week of March. According to previous threads, the decisions come between mid to late March and the actual date of final decisions is way later than Harvard's predictions. Rejections seem to come a couple days before acceptances, but the "financial aid loophole" sometimes gives feedback earlier (if you can log in to the financial aid website, you're accepted- at least, that's what seemed to happen in previous years' Harvard threads; it may be different this year).

Good luck waiting (it's driving me insane).

Haha, well that thing about rejections coming before acceptances puts a whole new twist on the suckiness of waiting, since we simultaneously have to want to hear back but then not want to hear back too soon. Meh.

yea i received an invite last week friday, finally a thread we can go to!

we need to revitalize this thread!

we need to revitalize this thread!
No kidding. The Duke and Mayo threads are way, way ahead of us already. Surely there's some enthusiasm out there for Harvard?

I'm so anxious about March that I'm having trouble sleeping. I keep thinking of things that went wrong in my interviews and things that I thought that went right... I *KNOW* that I'm not getting in, so why am I so obsessed??? Why was every part of my interview experience so perfect? Oh Harvard, why must my love be unrequited? It's just not fair.

I'm determined to make this thread more active. Did anybody wish they had seen more during their stay? I wish that I had gone to MGH and the Ether dome, but it was really far away and I had so many other things that I wanted to see (I spent the pre-interview break roaming through BWH, Children's, and Beth Israel with a fellow interviewee). I *LOVED* the Gardner museum (I saw it the day before my interview). It really helped me relax for my interview. Well, best of luck to those with upcoming interviews!!!

Wish Harvard had given me some love; they looked good on paper and people who have visited say awesome things about it. But, this could be a good thing. If they don't put value on the things I've done (many of which I'll continue to do during medical school) then I'd rather find out now than as a frustrated student.

Well, Harvard is clearly missing out by not interviewing you. Their loss. Hope that your admissions process continues to be amazing, Bonsai!

ok,
i hope this doesnt sound like a silly question, but for some reason I forgot to print out a hard copy of my harvard application... assuming I would have access to it online. Now it seems like I dont have access to it online, and have my interview in three weeks.
can someone
1)tell me how I can access it online if its possible (provide the URL)
2)post the application questions (i can figure out what I wrote for them).

Thank you !

I was under the impression that the harvard secondary didn't have any questions unless you applied to the HST and MD/PhD programs?

phew...maybe thats why i didnt print it out... thanks!

thank you. i'm in my senior year, so i guess i just submitted the AMCAS.
