Just curious what others have encountered with coursework that is anywhere from 6 to 14 years old.

I graduated with a BS n Biology in 1998.
I am applying for Fall 2008 PharmD.

Even though my coursework is old, I scored 98 %tile in Bio and 94%tile in Chemistry. I currently teach a year long Pharmacy Tech program for a High School Academy and I use my chemistry and I use my biology a lot, including A&P.

Is anyone else here in the same boat with old coursework?

I was wondering what schools you applied to and/or got interviews for.
Thank you in advance for your input!

I took some of my pre-reqs (english and couple gen eds) in 1997 and didn't have a problem with getting accepted. I know that schools usually prefer for the science courses to be completed within the last 5 years, depends on the school. Other than that I think your other stuff sounds good, should be a plus!

Don't view the distance between your prior coursework and your current application process as a negative. More important, don't appologize for it!

You've got something that admissions committees are looking for: experience, maturity, & focus.

Based on the information you've provided, you would appear to be in a very advantageous position.

Students with demonstrated abilities and experiences are the applicants that make committee members sit up and take notice. Likewise, these tend to be the applicants that single themselves out during interviews.

As someone who has been involved for almost 20 yrs in applicant selection, I look forward to speaking to prospective students with varied experiences and not-typical pathways that lead to my school's front door.

Good luck. Focus on your strengths.

I am in the same boat as you. I graduated with BS in microbiology in 1997. My coursework are over 10 years old. Well, it depends on the school cause USC in calif require that all prerequisite be taken no more than 7 years old. I applied there but they told me to retake the prerequisites. Also MCPHS and Colorado also has this standard. You might want to retake some of the core science as I am doing now to refresh, but your PCAT is high so you know your stuff. WHat school did you appy to ? Have you gotten interviews

Thank you for the input. I will focus on the positive as you suggested. I still plan to let the admission committees that have a limit on coursework to make an exception because I have been using many of the subjects in my teaching.

PharmCAS just mailed out my applications on Friday, so hopefully I'll hear something by the New Year!

Have not heard anything yet. PharmCAS just mailed out my application on Friday. So far I have applied to WV, SU, Albany, MWCCP, Wingate, Pitt, and considering St. John Fisher and others. I was just looking for some feedback from others who have applied with 10 to 14 year old coursework and received an interview or acceptance. This way, I can look at those schools and consider them. Some schools specifically say on their website that courses can be no older than 4 to 7 years (varies from school to school). Some schools do not address it on their website. Like you said, hopefully the high science PCAT scores will help them overlook the age of my coursework.

Keep me posted and I'll do the same. Have you gotten any interviews?

Hi - I currently go to Mercer, and some of my coursework was actually completed in the very late 1980's. I was never questioned about that issue, and only had to take 2 classes to fulfill their list of prereqs. However, I did have a similar situation as you - very high PCAT scores, which I felt was almost a necessity in order to show the adcom that I still knew what I was doing.

Good luck!
