I don't think you can be religious and truly intelligent. Religion is based on faith and faith is the purposeful suspension of critical thinking (i.e. believing something without the evidence) so I don't see how those two things can be compatible.
I don't agree with this. If you feel so strongly about this I would assume you would also agree that someone who is willing to acknowledge that there is a possibility of a higher power is also at least someone what unintelligent. Now someone else already pointed out all the great thinkers so I'll hit a different point.
For example Neil DeGrasse Tyson has repeatedly said he is not atheist (he is agnostic) and he doesn't agree with their viewpoints and thinks as a whole they are slightly absurd (he used a funny analogy of non-skiers don't get together and talk about how much they don't ski. And then try to convince other people not to ski.). However he is probably is certainly much more intelligent and better and critical thinking than anyone on here.
And another example is Christopher Hitchens. A very famous debater and he has written many books. I've watched debates where he said by the vast majority of great people in his field will not say that there is not a God but that he feels the argument is better on the other side. He's forgot more about religion than you or I will ever know and he's not even willing to go to the extent you are.
The point is many undeniably intelligent people are religious and there are certainly compelling claims for it as others have pointed out (genome project). The majority of the people who would agree with your statement are people who know a little bit but have convinced themselves they've got it all figured out.
Also to anyone wanting to respond to this, probably studying for finals and won't be checking. Just wanted to offer my viewpoint.

No, your premise is completely wrong. Your first sentence makes no sense, why would you assume that I don't acknowledge a higher power? Wtf? Religion and agnosticism are completely different, of course I acknowledge that. You wasted your time building an argument based on a false premise. Damn kids these days..
So you are willing to say anyone who is religious can't be intelligent (your post). But then you, personally, are also willing to acknowledge that there might be a higher power? I'm confused by your reasoning. You are willing to say "Yes, I acknowledge a higher power could exist" and then also say "Anyone who is religious can't be intelligent.". I'm just not following.
The fact that you claim to read/watch the new atheists who by and large subscribe to this view and still can't follow is a problem, I agree.
His information was outdated. (Creationism, not physics)
