Has politics come up in any of your interview questions ?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yes. Talked about how I wanted to be active in politics one day when asked about future aspirations. Had a decent talk about Ben Carson with my interviewer at one school (the one I’m going to matriculate at).

On another note there was one school that asked me a few political-ish questions. What are your thoughts about weed legalization? 3rd trimester abortion? It was a school near Mexican border so was clear what they were asking me. (Did not like this school at all.) at this same school he asked me about future aspirations and I said make changes through work in politics and he got a little upset. Said I should use the language of community activism over politics because it might turn people off. Idc I speak it how I see it. This school also had a dress code to lectures with a strict strike system that goes on your record if the dress rules are disobeyed..

You know, I prepared answers for all kinds of political questions and didn’t get a single one. I was almost disappointed lol. 😛

I have had some interviews where the school staff has commented on the general insouciance this current administration has towards science, but aside from that, nothing specific.

Politics has come up a few times, generally not specific politicians, but the idea that politics affects medical policies has. I would also say that the general tenor of civil discourse has been a topic I have discussed as well.

Politics only came up because I’ve done extensive policy and activist work. I don’t think it generally comes up, but it’s not a bad idea to be aware of the basics of healthcare policy if only for your own edification.

Yes, I got questions regarding healthcare policy in the style of “what do you think of the current changes/debates right now?” I’d definitely be prepared to discuss it in an intelligent manner that doesn’t alienate anyone!

I had a few questions that might be considered political thanks to having lgbt activism as a part of my application

I was directly asked during one of my interviews about politics relating to health care. The ACA, Donald Trump's proposed health care plan (I interviewed during the election cycle), etc. Nothing unrelated to health care came up.

This seemed to not be the experience of other students who interviewed the same day. So I'd say it's fair game but not likely to come up in probably 3/4 of interviews, based on my experience in my application cycle.

Abortion came up in one of my MMIs.

In the rest of my interviews, Politics didn't come up so much as Policy (partially because it ties into my work history/future goals, so I often mentioned an interest in it). I feel like the difference is that nobody asked about my political leanings (right/left, democrat/republican, what have you) even when they asked about a specific policy/current issue. While specific policies are obviously political, by purposely not bringing political affiliation in it allowed for more nuance and less emotionally charged answers.

Yes, at a few interviews discussions became political but not in the "who did you vote for" kind of way. At MMIs there are often policy style questions where you must take a stance and those are inherently political. In traditional interviews, I have activities on my app which are overtly political.
