I want to profess my extreme dorkiness by getting pimped out w/a lightweight yet solid rolling backpack. Do any of you have one you would recommend (or that "a friend" recommends)?

A bag that holds a binder and couple of mid-sized books would be perfect.
I have a 15.4 in laptop but could carry that in another bag if necessary.

Thanks for any tips.

hahaha i'm not too sure if you're going to get any responses on this one.

i can honestly say i have not seen a single person dragging one of those around here...but i really expected to see about a third of my classmates with them.

but of course, i have yet to actually carry any books, and i don't think any of my classmates are either...so a rolling backpack probably isn't so relevant when you just have a laptop and a notebook/binder.

Well, I'm in a strict PBL program so don't have the luxury of just carrying a binder w/notes. Books are my life (and I'll take that over 8 hrs of lecture any day). I don't use a traditional backpack for a variety of reasons, so a rolling bag is my next best option. All the rolling bags I've seen at school are too wide for my taste -- people have a hard time getting them through half-open doors.

If anyone does have suggestions, I'm all ears!

Someone in my class has one, and everyone refers to it as her suitcase. She's not very popular, and her big, ugly rolling backpack makes her even less popular, especially since she leaves it in the aisles to trip people.

I generally have nothing against them, just when this girl uses them. My parents got some for traveling, I think at a Samsonite store; they're pretty light-weight and compact.

Personally I'm not a big fan of wheels on any type of luggage. For a more eloquent description of why see this link: http://www.onebag.com/bags.html and scroll to the part where it reads "Wheels: A Poor Alternative"

L.L. Bean makes a wheeled backpack: http://www.llbean.com/webapp/wcs/st...noDept=&guideId=-2&moduleId=8706&feat=8706-dg

i can't speak to the unpopular girl's situation (although really, why hasn't someone pointed out how she might be more considerate? is this high school? in a similar situation at my school someone did just that, with great results), but i would do my best to be considerate despite my rolling bag. i have a place to keep my bag where it won't hurt anyone, and i'm looking for a compact version so i don't fill the hallway on my way to class.

if people would look down on me b/c i have a rolling bag then i'll have to develop a thicker skin. i'm disappointed that even some medical students have a hard time empathizing with someone who has needs different from their own.

thanks for the ll bean bag tip. as far as wheels being a poor alternative, they seem to be the only alternative for those who are unable to carry a heavy bag or who want to reduce the back/neck strain &/or brachial plexus compression that comes from carrying excessively heavy backpacks. what's more, i'm a very small person, so even a moderately heavy backpack constitutes a significant portion of my body weight. i'm not going to walk miles with the thing, just from car to school/home.

Thanks, guys! I will definitely buy one of the bags in the links you sent.

Take care,

She's easy to spot -- it's red and it makes a lot of noise in the halls. She nearly killed me after I hurt my knee snowboarding and could barely walk b/c she wouldn't move the freakin' thing in the lecture hall, and i tripped on it.

Why would anyone subject themself to the social ridicule that comes with a rolling backpack, I mean really? It is almost like you are looking for attention.

Maybe you could also wear a fanny pack to help you store your stuff.

Maybe a hat that has water bottles on the sides and a tube/straw so you can sip water from you hat.

Get back and forth on your hip leg powered scooter to complete this package 😱

I don't think she was saying they look down on her because she has a rolling bag. Sounded like she was already unpopular for other reasons and her inconsiderate usage of the rollerbag added to that existing unpopularity.

I think for the most part, a lot of newer rolling luggages have solved the problems listed in that website about luggage. That website sounds highly anal-retentive.
