So I was looking at my overall GPA and its 3.2 🙁 I got a 4.0 and 3.67 my first two quarters, then I got a two B's and a C- one quarter, and two B's in the summer.

The C- was intro to Chem, so it isnt part of the main three chem classes. Should I bother re-taking it, or should I aim for a 4.0 for the next couple of quarters? I want to keep my GPA above 3.5....

Um...I do believe you need to do BETTER then a C-. Cause normally C-is not consider passing by dental schools. Someone corrrect me if I am wrong!!!

Well I'm going to ask if I can take it again, but at my school a C = passing.

Did you get into a dental school with a 3.3? I want to apply to UW, but they require a high GPA...

Sorry I am a little confused. Is that the chem course you're using to apply to dental school or the 3 main chem classes you mention are the ones you'll be using to apply to dental school? If you don't plan on using that C- in Chem to apply to dental school, you should be fine. You're welcome to retake that class to prove to dental schools that you can do it, IF you have time. I don't know how your school works, can you take higher division classes if you didin't pass the intro level ones? Like you said, C is passing at your school.

And yes, I got into dental schools with a 3.3. Again, grades aren't everything. Each school is different, some of them REALLY care about GPA and some care more about your over all package. I don't know anything about UW so I don't know what they're looking for in an applicant. Just keep in mind their AVERAGE GPA is just an average. There are people getting in above and below that average stats. If you're below it, strengthen your application in ALL other areas to enhance your chances.

The chem isnt part of the three chem classes that I need to get into dental school, it was just intro to chem since I've never taken a chem class before. I go to a community college so I dont want to take most of my classes here since I plan on transferring to UW next Winter, and finishing all my science and math classes there...

So if I do real well on the DAT and other areas, and have a overall GPA of 3.5 I should be good? Thats what a couple of dentists and pre-dental students have told me

Of course!! Try to get a 20 or above if you're GPA is little bit below their average. Get heavily involved with student organizations and do community services. Pick up leadership positions .etc When it's your turn to apply, make sure you have strong personal statement and letters of Rec, and apply early. A buddy of mine is really trying to get into UW too so best of luck to all of you.

I am going to get letters of rec from the dentists that I shadowed, and some of them went to UW so I hope that helps me when I apply to UW 😀

And by student organizations, do you mean like clubs at school? I'll try to join some.

Yap...I am pretty sure if the school has a dental school, then you gotta have pre-dental club on campus for undergrad. Then there are clubs like honors clubs such as A.E.D preprofessional health honors society. That's a national recognize organization. Don't know if you school has it though. I am pretty sure you'll figure out what to do once you do a little research. Oh ya, if you have time to do research, get your hands on that too. Only do it if you have time and you won't hurt your grades by doing too much.

As far as letters go, MAKE sure your professors KNOW you on a personal level, not just someone who's like #3 in his/her class. Go to their office hours as much as you can to talk to them. That's how they're more willing to write you a strong letter instead of saying stuff like...oh he's #3 in my class and did very well overall. Asked questions in my class blah blah blah.

Does it matter if the the professors are at a community college? I am maybe close with one since I've had the same teacher for economics.

Thanks for all the help! You really helped me not stress! 😀

Hum...community college professors. I would say NO, but I didn't go through that myself so I really don't know. Ask UW and see what they think about that.

No prob, glad I can help out a fella pre-dent.

When I did my undergrad, I had to retake some classes. However, if you get a C and retake it and get a B, the C will still be applied towards your GPA. So if you purposely fail a class, and retake it later and do better, that is an option.

DO NOT DO THAT. Even if you retake a class, the previous grade will STILL be calculated into your GPA when you apply. Trust me, I learned the hard way when I asked my o-chem professor to fail me on purpose. He didn't allow me to take one of the test and gave me a fat ZERO because I just happened to had a fever the morning of the test and didn't have a doctor's note. Back then I was thinking..oh well, that sucks, I guess I'll just retake it and get a higher grade next time, it's cool.

Then later on when I applied, I reazlie...wow FML!!!!! that F counted towards my GPA and dropped my 3.46 down to a 3.3.

Sure there are some schools that'll take the higher grades, but how many actually consider that, I dont know.
