I'm guessing most if not all programs require the students to bring extracted teeth for practice and labs. In addition the WREB requires them for endo, not sure about NERB or any other licensing exam. Here is what I find ironic, many of the dentists and oral surgeons I have been asking are saying that it is against OSHA policy to give away the teeth even if they are stored in Formalin or 10% bleach in water. Has anyone else run into this problem and think it's ironic that the programs and licensing agencies are requiring you collect them?

OSHA has a specific exception for dental students, if you write to someone at OSHA you can probably get an official letterhead that says so too.

yeah, at the OS office i worked in for years, we never saved teeth. Then one day a student explained that it was ok. from that point on we have multiple mason jars filled with 3rds.

OSHA makes an exception allowing dental students or upcoming dental students to collect teeth. So not a problem for us. They're just some uninformed dentists out there.

Thanks for the info. My old dentist is saving me some teeth so it's all good. Armorshell or Tinman...what are the guidelines as far as which teeth are good to save? No fractures, restorations, etc.... Thanks!!

Depends on the school. Pacific wants literally all extracted teeth you can get. You sort out the ones that are good for endo/carious operative and they use the rest for research.

The NERB gives you a plastic "endodontic" tooth which screws into your typodont. From what I know, I heard it's a joke because the canal is filled with wax and very easy to remove when you're instrumenting the tooth. So you have to drill an access, measure the length of the tooth (outside of the mouth), instrument the canal, and obturate it (fill it). I don't know about the other regional exams and if even the NERB has changed it (my information is from 2005).

should we start collecting teeth before we even start school?

I just started collecting now for next fall's 1st year class.

The earlier I start, the more I have. The teeth aren't gonna go bad 😉 As long as I don't store them long-term in bleach.

It helps to have a good family friend in a OMFS office 🙂

I feel sorry for the admin or whoever had to go and delete all 50+ posts they made. They were blowing this forum up lol

My money is on the admins having to do the same with CMedical... 19 posts in 30 minutes.

look at sonylarkhi's post at the top... (post 7)
