I just got mono, a few weeks before my MCAT. I'm considering moving my MCAT back some time because there is pretty much no way I can study for it right now. I'm sleeping for a large majority of the day. Would it be better to apply this cycle a month or two late or just wait till next year?

Sorry to hear that you're sick 🙁 Mono is no bueno

If your MCAT is in a few weeks, I'm assuming it's an April date? You can take the MCAT in June or even early July and still be considered relatively early, as long as you submit your AMCAS and get it verified so that you can be complete when your MCAT scores come in.

Also depends on how strong of an applicant you are. How is your GPA and how have you been scoring on practice tests prior to getting sick?

Yeah, a June MCAT is by no means "late" if everything else in your application is ready as soon as you get your scores back.

Definitely set it back! No use taking it and not getting the score you deserve/ have earned. Make sure the rest of your app is good to go than you can slide your MCAT score in there at the end. Do NOT take the MCAT unprepared!

Survivor DO

I submitted my AMCAS in June and completed my secondaries in July. I took my MCAT in the beginning of September. My apps were on hold until my MCAT scores were released in the beginning of October. I interviewed in Nov/Dec/Jan. I was accepted to four schools, including MD programs. Don't worry too much about the timing, just make sure you score well on your MCAT and the rest will work out.

My exam date is currently April 27, my gpa is a 3.7 and my scores are around 32-33. My ECs are pretty strong with my strongest point being my research with publications. I didn't know really how late I can apply and be considered relatively "early" applicant, that was my main worry

If you dont mind me asking, how were your stats?

If you are complete with AMCAS verified and MCAT score applied in August, you should be fine and still relatively early. Even being complete in September isn't late, but it's also not early. Shoot for submitting your AMCAS no later than early July so it can be verified by August. While you wait for your MCAT score, you can work on secondary essays so that you can churn out secondaries as soon as you get them (the school-specific threads have the essay prompts as the first post in each thread).

I was a fairly late applicant as well, complete in late Sept/early Oct, and while I had a successful cycle, I would still advise people to apply as early as they can. It's no fun interviewing in January when you know you're interviewing for a waitlist spot. 🙁 It also depends on your stats, as a strong applicant can definitely manage to do well with a late application, whereas an average/weak applicant might have a harder time.

Crappy UGPA of 3.2, did a one year masters with a GPA of 3.96, MCAT was a 30 (straight 10's across the board). One year research in pathobiological sciences. One year working as EMT, two years working as a tech in the ER, and 3 years working as a counselor in psych. Lots of EC's and volunteer work.
