Have any of you ever done a rotation or some studying outside of your country? I heard today about someone doing a med school rotation in Kenya and thought that would be very challenging and rewarding.

YEP.

Surf the web for overseas versions of what you are interested in. You should find lots of info.

I've been overseas quite alot (mostly europe) and volunteered in France, Norway, and Finland.

Wanna talk about socialized medicine?

Hi,

AMSA has a very informative and detailed section the lists the school overseas that allow US students to do rotations and have them count on our transcripts. Its up to you to set them up, but they look like a great opportunity to do some work abroad. I'm probabli shooting to head back to Asia during 4th year sometime. Good luck. 🙂

if you are interested in a quasi-medical summer experience in Africa either before medical school or after 1st year, check out Operation Crossroads Africa

Do most of these programs have a fee? If so, are there any you guys know of that are covered by your school's alumni organization? Or are there some overseas programs that offer stipends? Just wondering - it sounds like an awesome opportunity.

A word on the away rotations: be very careful where you choose. The more exotic it sounds, the less you may gain from it. eg in a rural clinic deep in the Amazon or the Congo, not enough meds or vaccines or surgical equipment or safety equipment, and you have to treat HIV/AIDS patients. It can be very depressing. I'm an African, and come from a family that is involved in medical education, so I would know.
The best options may be in NorthAfrica/ the Mediterranean Basin, South Africa, Latin America or South East Asia. Also, if you have a taste for danger, MSF may be a good choice. They offer a lot of trauma care, public health interventions and psychosocial support in the refugee setting
