I was wondering if anybody has taken the Dat and done well on the OChem without taking the class. I have to take the DAT this summer but I have not taken OChem yet. I am going to study it like crazy and hopefully I can get a decent score. Just wanted to know if anybody else is the same boat.

I'm not in the same boat, but am currently studying for the DAT and I learned a lot of the o-chem material covered in Kaplan from Gen Chem II. I know every school teaches it differently, but you've probably been exposed to some of the o-chem material already. Good luck!

Definently get a good OChem textbook to help you through it (possibly even two just to compare). You wont learn OChem from KAPLAN. It is more of a review.

If you have the money, I am sure you could get a lot of great help from Chemistry TA's in your university. They may be able to tutor you. I know in my school they had OChem tutoring centers for free. Maybe your school offers something like that.

I think it is ABSOLUTELY possible to learn the material on your own. In fact, I am pretty sure I learned nothing from my OChem lectures. I learned everything from reading at home.

Good luck!

Dude, I dont envy the hours that you are going to put in studying, but I can recommend some good resources. My Ochem teacher was the best science teacher I have ever had, and she recommended the Wade textbook. We never used it since all she did was show us mechanism (after mechanism, after mechanism....) but she spoke highly of it and I have it, and it is actually really good. If you find yourself getting stuck on some things, my teacher also made a bunch of PDF's about all types of stuff that I would be happy to pass along to whoever wants em.

I put myself in a similar situation -- I took the DAT before taking Bio. I studied my a$$ off for three months and ended up with a 19 in Bio. I think, as long as you don't need too much gchem and bio review, you should have enough time to thoroughly learn ochem. Good Luck! 🙂
