If I were to go to med school and then residency to become a doctor, will there be any time in between to have a child?

My girlfriend and I are interested in applying for med school, but we don't want to have children late in our life. Is it a possiblility to have children sometime between all the chaos? Will it hinder our careers/progess?

thanks
henry

Just a thought:

Children who are born to older parents tend to be better adjusted and less prone to demon-like behavior... I don't have the stats right now to back this, but I know there's a study out there somewhere that confirms this. I think it has something to do with the parents being more mature and financially secure as a whole... Mr. Adventure suggests getting a pure bred red Doberman to fill the void in the meantime. There is truly no better companion in this life than a Dobie. What's more, if you want to take off for the evening, you can't put a baby in a kennel (not legally anyway), but you can kennel a dog.

I know quite a few mormon guys in medical school who have multiple children and are doing quite well. Why is that Mormons have so many children is my question??

I myself am not Mormon or LDS, but I too have had the same thought. So, I found an article from a Utah newsource that may give a little insight. Below is a link to a newspaper article regarding advice given to LDS students by one of their "senior members" (I am not quite sure as to the faith's hierarchy, and what place Dr. Nelson occupies in that structure.) He (Dr. Nelson) advises students not to wait to have children. From the article it looks as if there is commandment in the church to have children. From Deseret News:

"He urged his listeners to seek first to follow the teachings of the church before seeking wealth, which includes the commandment to create families."

In my extended family, there are many devout Catholics with large families. The reason for this is the Catholic church's position (disdain) on the use of birth control. However, I don't know if the LDS church takes a similar stance.

Very interesting indeed. I figured it had something to do with it. One of my friends joked that they had trouble converting people so they just created mroe.... Funny, but ultimately wrong I suppose as LDS is one of the fastest growing religions....of course that could be due to the alarming birth rate too....

From casual observation, it appears to me that the LDS focus on the family as the essential cohesive unit of society is the source of both their draw to new converts and of their membership's choice to procreate and bring up large families in the church.

However, I also read an article in college that mentioned that LDS teachings involve specific support for men having a minimum of six offspring. I can't provide the cite for that.
