I need some peer/professional advice!!

I am a sophomore biology major at UNC but my overall gpa is at 3.27 and science gpa at 2.80. I've heard the average GPA's of those already in dental school is around 3.40-3.75 and judging from my grades in my pre-reqs, it's going to be insanely hard to pull that one off. I am currently taking ecology/evolution and have a low B and orgoI with a low A. However, no matter what I do, I can't seem to be able to make it into that top tier and get an A in any science class (I've taken chem101/102/analytical and genetics). 😕

I need to know whether I should seriously start thinking about different options or continue trucking on down this dental path. I love dentistry and I've always wanted to do it but I just don't know if my grades are cut out for it and I need to be realistic.

ANY advice is appreciated!! Thank you!

Read the under 3.0 club thread for inspiration. It can be done and only being a soph. you have plenty of time to rock some bio classes (that I find easier than chem). Just get into gear now and you can do it!!

ps. People on here will inflate their stats to make themselves look better. I could just as easily say I have a 4.0 and a 28 on my DAT and no one can prove me wrong. Take everything with a grain of salt and have courage in yourself that you can get into d school!

You are in the state and the time frame for having a good shot for sure. With UNC taking a huge portion instate and ECU opening this year and taking only in state...It is still very possible for you to get accepted.

Keep the faith.

You also have plenty of time to pull it up as well as do good on the DAT and do other EC's that will set you apart.

There are a lot of schools that take into account your "progress". Seeming as how you still haven't taken a lot of the pre reqs for school, you still have a lot of time to turn things around. I know you said you have a really hard time making an A in your science classes, but I know you can do it if you REALLY want to do it. Explore ALL of your options, group study, go in the meet with the prof frequently, go to your University's tutoring center. If you really want to be a dentist, set your mind to it and don't let yourself or anyone else tell you that you can't do it. As cliche as I may sound, you can do it.

Looks like it's time to take it to the next level! Time to work harder than ever before. There's still time left. Think of it as a basketball/football game, except there's 2 years on the clock instead of 2 minutes 😉. The ball is in your hands. Go for it stud!

THIS! OP, you have a huge advantage being in NC. Not to mention you have two years left. Your overall GPA is already in great shape but try to take as much science as you can (2-3 classes/semester and shoot for >3.5).

I was in your same situation with a much worse GPA at the end of my sophomore year and now I have 5 interviews. You got this!

Here is the FIRST THING THAT YOU SHOULD DO: NEVER EVER SHARE YOUR IDENTITY ON A PUBLIC FORUM. YOU DONT go around your school telling your grades, then why should you do it here. If you want to share your grades do it anonymously. dont you think your classmates will be here. I can tell you more but you are smart enough to figure out the rest.

Regarding whether you are good enough or not is not decided by us or anyone in this world. ITs only decided by one person(YOU). Its a self confidence thing, you need to trust yourself no matter what and everyone goes through it. Grades are important and they will determine your acceptance. But if you believe that a person with a 4.0 at their school will do way better than a person with a 3.0 who are both accepted, well my friend you are living in a fantasy which only goes in a straight line. GPA is only a 3 digit number proving how hard you work. just because a dentist graduates with a 3.0 and another one graduates with a 3.9 does not make the other one incompetent either, you will never know. Where is all this bs getting to... its all about trusting yourself. Believe in yourself that you can do it. If you still dont believe in yourself. Tell yourself that you believe in yourself and you will start believing.

really, well did you ask the people who are killing the class how they studied and mock their study habits may be that will work... lol i used to do that in every class. Sharon study harder do everything you and other people in your class did and focus on your end goal and dont distract yourself away from it. And always believe in yourself. GOOD LUCK

and hopefully you will conceal your identity.

Thanks for all the support and encouragement! You guys are great!

And to peanutb, I definitely see your point. I rarely post on public forums like this so thanks for the warning, I'll keep it in mind for future posts/forums.
