Would the admissions committee look disfavorably upon an applicant with a double major and a master's degree all in 4 years? This is assuming the applicant has very good extracurriculars and research...

Basically, given two applicants that are idential, would the applicant with the double major plus a master's be looked down upon for doing too much?

I am a junior and I am well on the track to getting a double major and a master's degree when I graduate...

Why do you want to do this? Neither college nor med school application involves a competition to get as many degrees as possible. It won't be looked down upon, but unless you're just really interested in the material I wouldn't kill myself trying to get three degrees.

😕 😕 😕 😕

Since when is doing too much a bad thing?

The new threads these past few days are taking neuroticism to a whole new level.

If you want to do it and you won't kill yourself doing it, then do it.

A Master's Degree and a Double Major in four years? Yeah that'll be a red flag to medical schools. There's no way they would want someone that tries hard.

How is this even possible? Most masters programs take 2 years, research and a thesis. I know undergrad can be finished in like 2.5 years with one degree, but two takes like 3.5. I did both of mine in 4.5 years because of studying abroad and taking the MCAT.

There are numerous 5 year masters programs that work by combining senior and master thesis work but a double major and a master's degree in 4 years is borderline impossible. I mean, unless you're William Hwang's brother or something I don't see it happening.

Exactly my dilema. I am definitely not even close to Hwang but I have been taking 20+ hours per semester and have somehow managed to get to the point where I can take 1 more year of 19 and 17 credits and take my candidacy exam and achieve a double major and a masters degree. Now, by no means do I lack extracurriculars or even time; I just skip classes and learn it faster outside of class (3.97 gpa so far) but I am afraid the adcom will think the number of hours just signifies that I have no life or something?

If you don't lack extracurriculars why would the ADCOM think that you don't have a life?

I'm not sure, I am already committed too far on the path to turn back but I am just worried that they may view the huge number of hours per semester negatively.

I don't think you should be worried about this 👍 It's a great accomplishment if you can pull it off, but it will not be an excuse for an otherwise lackluster application (you have to make sure you've still got the activities to hang with the rest of your competition). I think this will likely be a positive for your application though if you can do it.

As long as you can keep up the GPA. When they ask about your 3.0, you can't expect to use "well, I double majored" as a valid excuse for any holes in your app.
