Next semester will be my last before I graduate. I came into this fall semester as a pre-med with the intentions of becoming a doctor. After much reason and self-debate, I came to the conclusion that medical school was not the right choice for me. With this in mind, I still knew I wanted to get into the health care field. I talked to some people and researched pharmacy and have decided I would like to attend pharmacy school. The only problem is, unlike medical schools, I have found that pharmacy schools do not have a common set of pre-requisites. This is severely hindering the amount of schools I will be able to apply to. For example, I have not taken public speaking, calculus 2, intro. to psychology, or a full year of human anatomy and physiology (I took a semester of animal physiology), since none of these were necessary for medical school. A bigger problem is that the physiology course I took was an upper level course (600 level), so I would get no credit for human anatomy and physiology (500 level) if I took it next semester. Does anyone know how lenient schools are about having EVERY pre-requisite to apply? By the looks of it I may have to go for another year of undergrad. if I want to go to pharmacy school, which would be terrible. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hey there,

Pharmacy schools are not lenient at all on pre-requisites. You either have them, or they're in progress during your pre-matriculation phase, or you're not in. You can apply and get accepted to schools while your coursework is IP, and some schools even let you take pre-requisites up until the summer prior to matriculation.

A good resource is pharmcas.org, go to School Listing, and sort by whichever you prefer. You can look through every school and exactly what PR's they require, and make a table for yourself. You'll find that there will be a lot of overlap and very few schools require completely weird things.

Hey thanks for the advice I'll look into that link.

What would you say are the most common prerequisites for pharmacy schools that differ from pre med (premed = full year chem, physic, organic, bio and english. semester biochem and a semester of calc.)

Thanks again.

Checkout PharmCAS - school directory - all of your questions are answered there...

The prereqs are very similar.

Beat you to the punch, ^0degC H2O(l).

To OP, the courses you listed there are basically what you're looking at for pharmacy as well... add public speaking/speech also, and a handful of schools require 2 sem/3qtr of Calc.

Cool. Thanks guys.

I suggest using the pharmcas link previously posted and make a list of all the schools whos pre-requisites you meet. Then you can choose to narrow it down by average gpa of accepted 1st year students, tuition, etc. Good luck.
