Having two different pairs of loupes, is it necessary?

Maybe. For me, no. I started in dent school with 3.5s from DFV, really awesome for preps & endos, I don't think I would prep with anything less. When I was in practice though I always wanted 2.5xs for exams so I got some, but the difference was insignificant and just led to me swapping back and forth between the two (unless I got tired of the 2.5xs and stopped bringing them). I was eventually glad I got 2.5xs when I joined a peds practice where I used the 2.5xs and ditched the 3.5xs (peds want more field of view of the kid, and loupes don't matter much to prep SSCs), but in general practice I should have just stuck with my 3.5xs. YMMV.

I know a few colleagues that have 2.5xs for nearly everything, and then have 4.5s for endo instead of a microscope, so there's that too. Otherwise just for bread and butter stuff, you do so much hopping around in a general practice it's not worth trying to carry two.

I've been dealing with a pair of loupes that have a metal ring that is loose inside of one of the lens casings. It's annoying since it blocks a little bit of my vision and darkens my field of view in one eye. I could send them off to get repaired, but then I'd not have loupes for practicals for a month... so I have been just tolerating the issue for the past few months.

In practice you want to have at a back up pair since your income depends on your ability to work. If something were to happen to one pair, it would be nice to have a second to be able to pick up while the other is in repair. In dental school you can get loupes for a good price, so I'd say go for it early if you have the money to burn. Otherwise wait closer till graduation to get the second pair.

Orascoptic now has a line where you can switch out the telescopes quickly. Same frames, but the optics are mounted with a removable magnetic system. You can just get different magnifications and switch them when necessary.

Helpful when one breaks/lost/out for repair.

I have the loupes Schmoob mentioned. Very happy.

I used to have a 4.3 for general dentistry and 6.0 Loupes for endo. I loved getting the orascoptic eye zoom which has 3,4,5 x interchangeable magnification so I don’t need to swap between loupes anymore.

That's also true what others have said.. and now that I actually think about it - while I desired having 2.5s for exams and general checks, I only actually made the dive when I had to send out my 3.5s for repair and I didn't want to go without any loupes.

Looking back if I wanted two sets (say worried about repairs), I'd have my 3.5s as my main working loupes, and just get a cheap set of adjustable 2.5x loupes off ebay - my hygienist tried em and actually they've worked out for her for a long while.
