Hello,

I was just wondering if anyone knew anything about med school, residency, or job opportunities for Hawaii. Or if there is even anyone on this board concerned with working or education in mental health in Hawaii..?
UHM Manoa? Hilo? Tripler? VA related residencies? Demand? anything relating to local politics and law that affect psychiatry practice?

Thanks in advance..

Amazingly, Hawaii has a forensic psychiatry fellowship. I always wondered what kind of experience that would be. Probably not quite as intense as Bellvue's or Einstein's.

Hello Anasazi23

Why is it amazing that Hawaii has a forensic psychiatry fellowship, and why would it not be as intense as Bellvue's aor Einstein's? I know those are both popular names in general, but I don't know much about forensic psychiatry (I know a little about forensic psychology).

Hawaii, as far as I know, has always been concerned with its brighter students leaving the state for jobs and education on the mainland, and they do have a nasty shortage of mental health care workers in many areas, including, of course, psychiatrists.

....simply because Hawaii just seems like a ----- happy place for lack of a better word(s). There's a tremendous amount of crime in NYC, and at least two major prison detention centers within walking distance (even if they require a vessel to get to) of Bellvue. I know next to nothing about Hawaii, but the population, I think would not lend itself to intense forensic psychiatric learning. I suppose I could look up the crime statistics for Hawaii in general or the litigations which require a physician psychiatrists expertise. But I've got a lot of other reading to do.

Nobody who knows about mental health situation in hawaii? even californians who just happen to have heard some gossip?

man.

The medical school has _strong_ preferences for Hawaiian residents. And declaring Hawaiian residency for the purposes of the medical school is much more involved than most (you need to have been born here, gone High School here, received your bachelor's degree here, or had both parents born here).

Not sure as to the rest.

Hawaii is very concerned about brain drain, though the state government is hoping to reverse this through some economic changes and incentives that their introducing.

The job market for health care in almost _any_ clinical field is very good. There are a lot of travelling PTs, PAs, Nurses, etc. Not sure about psychiatrists, specifically.
