I read a passage on EK101 while studying for the VR section of the MCAT that dictated that LOOKS comprise up to 70% of your first impression.

With your tone and voice comprising the other 20%, the passage stated that what you are actually saying is only about 5-10% of their perception.

So for those who have already interviewed at medical schools, would you agree with this? I realize that this may be hard to admit (who wants to admit that they are ugly?), but I think it's necessarily true.

Take a look at any JOBS that people apply for. Have you noticed that employers always hire the most good looking people (or more like all the hot girls)?

So if you're butt-ugly, I guess you would have a lower chance of wooing the admission staff than a hot girl with not much to offer but a pack of double D's and a fine bootay.

I am planning to hit the gym and try to lose a few pounds before going on interviews for exactly this reason!

Luckily, the admissions process is not totally based on first impressions 🙄

Seeing as my classmates are most certainly NOT all models, your looks should be one of your least worries in regards to interviews.

Is this not common-sense? You only get one chance to make a first impression, so you better look like a million bucks.

i also think of it in the sense that i would want someone (for a job, school, even a girlfriend) who takes care of themselves and how they look. Sure you can say, "Well it doesn't matter what other people think about my looks, all that matters is on the inside," but then you would just be naive. That stuff doesn't fly in the real world.

that being said, i'm sure med school interviews aren't as much based on how our looks and tone come across at a job interview. hopefully they put more thought into it than that.

but still, don't slack in the looks department if you can.

if looks didn't matter, why do we go to interviews in suits and ties? i'd much rather go in basketball shorts...but as my cousin always tells me, style over comfort cause you never know who you may run into on any given day.

I assure you that not everyone in med school is good looking.

A related thing to think about though is how you carry yourself. No slouching, make eye-contact, and don't mumble at your interview.

true. natural beauty is genes. not much you can do about it. just take care of what you got to work with.

Wearing a suit and tie and looking your best=/="worrying about not having DDs and a fine bootay."

So yes, how you carry yourself matters. Looks do not (or very little).

beat you to it in my previous post 😛

by all that, i meant work with what you have. not pure hotness.

didn't we just have this discussion last wk? I thought SDN showed you previous related threads based on title...?
anyway, yes, looks matter. It's subconscious. Being attractive will get you the job all other things being equal. Adcoms cannot adjust for this fact as no one is consciously aware of the degree to which it is happening.

Don't freak out. It's about looking your best, not looking like Brad Pitt. Take a shower, brush your hair, be trimmed and clean cut.

And guys, shine your shoes and wear suits that fit you. Go to a tailor and spend like 50 bucks tailoring your suit. You've just spent hundreds of dollars buying a suit, don't walk around looking like you borrowed it from someone else.

If you're overweight/obese, cutting a few pounds definitely doesn't hurt. With that said, there are overweight people in med school. Sometimes it's hard to keep off the pounds, and we all understand.

Does it help me that I look like Hiro from Heroes?

Sorry for all of you ugly people, but looks do matter.

Whether its a medical school interview, a job interview, getting laid, or anything else for that matter...

Good Looking + Good Personality > Ugly + Good Personality.

It's a fact of life. So again for all of you ugly people in denial, looks do matter and true beauty is not only on the inside but on the outside as well!

Yeah since getting my interview invite I have been on a crazy diet. I am planning on loosing 20 lbs before my interview... Interviews are such good motivation 😀

does size matter?

yes -- no short folks allowed in medicine :meanie:

unless you're referring to a different type of size, in which case I would say "yes" if you need to use it in order to get into the school.

seriously, was this whole thread begun with serious intentions?! There are good looking people/not so good looking people everywhere and in every walk of life. Put some time into your appearance to indicate that you actually care about attending X School of Med.

Of course, I'm on a crazy diet too in anticipation of my first interview, but that's because it happens on the same morning of my 5 year high school reunion. :meanie: That's a whole 'nother story

I do think looks matter tremendously in life. But if that were true for the interviews, why aren't medical matriculants or 40 year old men/women doctors known to be good looking in general?

Some say certain undergrad "party" schools have really good looking people, like the University of Texas. I've never heard of a medical schools having a reputation of " good looking" people.

All my doctors i've seen at the hospital and in rotation don't seem to have that "Hot" factor vs. say, your successful business women

(Business is where hotness+average IQ really would matter...)

if you mean " good looking" as in "proper" I'd agree that just about every profession needs to look proper..

1. We all know good looking people are preferentially treated. This isn't news and its not just interviews. Look it up.

2. Knowing this doesn't help, unless you want to get plastic surgery. What you can do is improve your body language and confidence.

I think I'm ugly. But my mom keeps saying how handsome I am. I'm so confused.

No way to tell. I'm going to ask my interviewer for an objective response.

I think I'm ugly. But my mom keeps saying how handsome I am. I'm so confused.

She's your mom. At minimum, she invested 9 months in you. If she doesn't find you "absolutely adorable," you must be the freaking devil incarnate! j/k... only because the devil incarnate would probably be absolutely beautiful just to throw us all off!

I know. To every mom, her boy is the handsomest and the most charming gentleman in the world. I'm not fooling myself.😉

Luckily, the admissions process is not totally based on first impressions 🙄

Seeing as my classmates are most certainly NOT all models, your looks should be one of your least worries in regards to interviews.

Technically, it is all about first impressions though. Think about it... even your primary application is a "first impression," and what you choose to say or choose not to say impacts the admission committee's opinion of you.

Then, you have you second impression in secondaries, and for the most part, this time they actually get to "see" you in your picture. Once again, what photo you choose to submit can impact their opinion of you.

In interview, it is all about the lasting impression you can make. As far as your looks go, looks involve much more than just physical appearance. Of course, you will need to look clean, tidy, and appropriately dressed, but also, how you carry yourself and the confidence you can project matters BIG TIME.

If I had a kid, and hes ugly, I would tell it to his face. But then again, I'm good looking and my future wife will def be good looking so this won't happen.

So the solution would be to bring this up with the admissions committee somehow and then it'll work the other way and you can guilt them into accepting you.*

*Must be butt fugly to work

:idea:Is it a bad idea to send shirtless flexing pics with my secondaries to ensure adcoms are aware of my Greek god hawtness? Here is the one I am considering:

the pic i sent showed more skin than that.

Well I do have double Ds and a fine bootay so I guess I'm all set then.

I don't think being "hot" is always a good thing. It is all about being ATTRACTIVE. Attractive people are not always hot or straight out of a magazine but there is something about them that makes you feel safe in their hands or comfortable to be around them. I think that is more important than being hot.

I'm not superficial but I guess I have known to be called hot on quite a few occasions. Of course I'm also the only Azn girl with a well endowed *cough* but I'll tell you this, it does not help me to have FEMALE interviewers. They are always staring at my chest and like I just know I'm not going to get the job. Male interviewers, sadly are a whole different story...

Hotness doesn't matter.
Attractiveness does.

Is it possible that looks can work against you?
For instance, what if they see you all big and muscular and think, meat head? Steroid use? Typical frat party boy?

Same with girls... they look like a party girl? or assuming they got far off their looks?

or just in general not be taken seriously

Pictures, please.🙂

This thread is veering wildly off course.

You'll do much better as a friendly, outgoing person without much in the looks department than the sullen stud who grunts out his answers. However, the fact is that there will be gorgeous people with fabulous personalities, and you'll never beat them. Sorry. There are a few people in my class who are hot, smart and personable. Most of the rest of us just get to pick two of those.

the ridiculous over-thinking of technicalities and semantics in this thread makes me miss college

Jealous much? 🙂

Thats why you don't bulk to the extreme. Anything to the extreme is undesirable. I have noticed that dress shirts and slacks makes you lose about 15 pounds. Thats why when I'm in my workout shirt, I look like the hulk, but when I am in my interview clothes, I look like Bruce Wayne.

There's no point in worrying about things you can't control. Look your best, be friendly, and be prepared.
